What kind of helicopter are you talking about? Is it nitro or electric? What type of motor and pinion does it have?

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Well since you posted this in the electrics forum I guess we can take a wild shot in the dark and assume that you are talking about some sort of electric motor. Most pinions on electrics have either one or 2 set screws. You say that it is spinning on the shaft. First off, probably the tip of screw is F'd, so replace the set screw(s). Next, once you have the replacement set screw(s) screw them into the hole before you mount the pinion to insure that there is no burr at the bottom of the hole that would prevent you tightening it properly. Everything good at this point? Ok now take the screws back out and put a drop of blue locktite into the hole, replace the screws. The motors shaft should have a flat spot on it. You want to make sure that the set screw goes square on to that flat spot. Put a drop of blue locktite onto the shaft and install your pinion. Tighten it down. Now comes the hard part. Put it aside and leave it alone for 24hrs. Do not take your allen driver to that screw to check it for tightness after that, if you do, you will break the locktite bond.

I lost my infamous tag line.
