Hello,
I would like to know if you guys like working in the CAD Industry? I only ask because I recently injured my back and can no longer do the line of work I was in. I have chosen CAD as my next line of work and begin school in a few weeks. I used to be an auto tech for 18 years and I find myself having to start over and I just wanted some feedback.
Thanks, Larry

I do and have been doing it for the last 20 years. I came from the manufacturing industry doing custom fabrication so every job was different. My office over looked over the shop floor so I could always see the tradesmen and the job progress.
The job was always high pressure because if their was no drawing then their was no job getting built and I would get my back side kicked. But loved the way you could see the job being made.
In my time of drating I think that their were only a handfull that realy enjoyed it. Most just got sick of sitting in a office and drawing all day. Choose the type of drafting that you want to do carefully. By that I mean I don't like jobs were the compaby makes all their money from my drawings like design consultants. You are always under paid and made to rush your work and you see no end product. Try and get a job were your in a small drafting team and your drawing assists the company make money in what they do.
My current job is with a builder as a design coordinator, I gather every scrape of information from all the drawings on the project and see if everything fits together. Where I see problems I talk to the architects and consultants to solve problem before they happen. Half day in the office and the rest on site.
I love drafting would not do enthing else.
Alex

it's awesome a lot easier to work with than drawing it by hand, if ya know how to use the program!

Autodesk Inventor is nice, SolidWorks looks nice to!

or just autocad...

Study !

I'm taking CAD at the local college and really enjoy it. It's much hared than I thought to learn. My nights are spent drawing circles and learning the commands. If your thinking of going to school to learn it then get the extra funds to get the program. It beats the heck outta sitting in the comp lab all day, but once you get the feel of it it's really cool. It's amazing how simple it is to draw the parts and things that we use daily. I figure in a year i'll be able to make all the rc parts I need with the schools CNC equipment.

i went to school for cadd back in 92. we started with autocad first half then learned microstation the second half. after graduating and now out looking for a job i found that autocad was the sytem mainly used around my area.
why would the school teach acad first then micrastation last ??

i would first check into the companies in your area and find out what platform they use, acad , microstation, etc.

also talk to some companies and ask how the field is in your area/region now and expected in the next couple of years.

Microstation and AutoCAD

AutoCAD is the most commonly used CAD program. But more state transportation departments are using Microstation. I know architects and engineers use both depending on the company. Once you learn one, the basic concept is the same, just the steps are different. Both the programs have their strengths and weaknesses. I think the more programs you know, the mor marketable you will be.

Learning curve

I took AutoCAD r9 training in the late 80's and took an 8-week course at a jr. college. After that, you should be efficient in about 4-6 weeks. You will learn your ways of drawing and only use 30-40% of the program. Your learning curve depends on your discipline you go into.

Architects use AutoCAD and Civil Engineers use Microstation or Autodesk Land Development Desktop. I practice architecture but if I had to do it over again, I would go into mechanical engineering, it pays more, just depends on what you like.

WJA02 is right, the money in architecture sucks, if I had to start over I would go into Civil work, alot more money and you get to go outside alot more often

as for CAD, its a good job, you get paid to draw, and it supports my hobbies

Great way to make a living. The only problem is that you have to keep up with the updates every year. If you can, learn Solidworks or Pro-Engineer. That's where the big bucks are. Another big plus is to learn military specifications for drawings and goemeter tolerancing.

Did you learn how to draw a line yet?

I can teach you a lot about AutoCAD.
I have been in this since 2001.

If you'd like to head towards a high tech CAD application (aerospace/ motorsport) I would think Dassault CATIA (Boeing, Airbus, McLaren F1) or PTC Pro/ENGINEER (Penske Indy Car, Ferrari F1) would be the ones to learn eventually.

Enjoy the classes

It works for me!!!

Are you taking mechanical or architectural CAD drafting? I believe there are more architectural drafting jobs available, at least here in the tri state area (NY, NJ, and PA). Even though the girls taking architectural were cute the guys seemed to be a light on their feet if you know what I mean LOL (kidding). I had to take a few jobs it the architectural field. They were ok because I wasn’t totally ignorant of it since I’ve done carpentry years before going to school for drafting. I was just more interested in things cars and aircraft so I took the mechanical course. The first two semesters we learned messy board drafting before they let us loose to screw up the computers third LOL (five semesters total). We also had to take physics, then strength of materials, and technical writing. Drawing 3D solids using CAD wasn’t in the curriculum but I found time to learn it myself. Like another said learn more than one program. My favorites are AutoCad and SolidWorks. I would like to learn Pro E.

CAD/CAM and CNC became another major interest, not through school but work and personal projects at home. With hobbies like RC helicopters and sport compact car tuning CAD is one of my most useful tools. Oh yeah it’s also good for earning paychecks.

Due to my time as a seniour consultant for an CAD vendor - it's now a hobby. Never ever I will sketch something by hand

i started on acad R12 then R13, R14 2000, 2004 then went back to 2000, and i still love it. im always drawing something on it. once i learned how to use it (self taught) i dont know what i ever did without it. granted there are scores of things im sure it will do that i dont use but what i do use sure makes life alot easier. it gets real fun when you learn how to do 3d. half the stuff i draw now is in 3d simply because you can see how things go together easier in 3d than 2d. give it some time and you will be hooked.

I love Auto Cad

Good morning to all

I learned how to use the Auto Cad 2D practically alone, but I had an enormous difficulty in to understand which was the logic of the 3D.

One day, a friend gave me a basic clue on the commands Rotation 3D, Subtract and Extrude, besides some information also simple on the space localization ( X, Y and Z ) of the Auto Cad 3D that the since then me could understand which is the logic of the 3D.

Today I don't get to do any drawing if I don't have the Auto Cad for close.

If you have any doubts or you are learning Auto Cad 3D, feel free to write me.
