Anyone know of a good place to watch/fly on the west side of Portland?

If you've ever been to Tammies [in Beaverton], you could ask about local flying fields.

There is a private field, mostly planks, southwest of Beaverton, and OMAS which is west of Hillsboro.

If you're interested, myself and a few other pilots from the valley meet up at a private field when the weather is nice. PM me, and I'll give you more information.

I actually picked up a OMAS newsletter last week. However, it looked more like the traditional RC plane club than a heli field. I also looked at the Canby Duster's site, but again that seemed more plane orientented. The Duster's field would be fairly close which is important to me. I like the idea of being able to go out for a couple hours of flying rather than making a day out of the deal. I guess I need to head out to a couple of fields and just see what's going on.

I know of a few heli pilots at the OMAS field. I hope he doesn't mind me mentioning his name here, but Peter Halay is one. You should be able to get contact information for him from the club web site.

I've flown at OMAS before. Tight confines, and fun over the lake right off the field. Paul Susbauer is on this board, and could likely tell you where to look. Check for his user name.

Thanks, John Cadwell

I fly at OMAS. This traditional Plank field is very tolerant of Helis. More of the members (~10 pilots of ~45 active fliers) are starting to fly them and the interest is growing. Just watch flying over the lake. Been in it twice when the engine flamed out and couldn't auto back to the runway due to lack of altitude. Helis don't float like planes do. Luckly no electronics or engine damage if you get the electronics turned off and properly take of the engine and water is in it.

Thanks guys! What is a good day (time?) to go out to watch?

Have any of you been out to the Canby Duster's field (south of Wilsonville)?

David,

Thanks. What is the entrance road like? Is it suitable for a bike (paved or good level gravel)? If the weather is nice I might ride my CBR out. If not, are there many guys out there on Sunday? What time do they usually light up?

The entrance road is gravel with a nice hill to the bottom where the field is. Never seen anyone on bike their. This time of year there is also mud aroung the entrance road. Most people start to show around 11-noon on Sundays. This Sunday the weather looks good and few people should show up. I won't be there. Going to hill a little white ball around a 7000 yard park.
