Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > R30 tail boom strike

I had practiced learning auto's all week on the sim, and was really getting good at them. So I went to fly on satruday and tried my first full down auto with my Raptor 30, and it was awesome, I mean I greased it in, sweet as can be. I was so proud of myself I spooled back up, went upstairs and tried it again, (thinking, this auto stuff is so easy). Well this time I came down a little to fast, and at the bottom did not flare as soon a I should have. The Heli hit the ground, (not earth shaking, but a little to hard) and the stock wood blades (they have alot of flex to them) hit the tail boom. Then the heli tipped over, and somehow the linkage on the throttle popped off. Needless to say I stood there and watched it do the chicky dance for what seemed like forever (probably 2 minutes). Finally the clutch busted and I could run up on it and pull the fuel line off to shut it down. $130 + blades repair cost, I am wonderin if the stock wood blades are not good for learning autorotations? Do they have to much flex? Would carbon/fiberglass blades have hit the boom also. Would a stiffer head have helped me out? Thanks for your experience!!!

I am not an expert, but I assess that it has to do also with the main blade grips , if you have metal grips you minimize the boom strike possibility. They are more solid and you might survive in some cases. It is not a rule but the harder the better. The heavier blade with the CG by far in front of the Center of Pressure is the key of success for an effecient auto performance.

Of course the aerodynamic nature of the airfoil and the allocation of mass along the blades contributes positively to the auto performance.

Don't forget, a carbon blade holded by a metal grip reduces the flexibility of the hole main blade system. Moreover the rubber dumpers contributes to flexibility. A hard head is more sensitive and agine but less stable.

Furthermore, the length of the main mast in conjunction with the blades length provide you the available spacing to avoid boom strike. The shorter a mast is, the easier for the blades to kiss the boom.

I remember that my old Concept 30 was sensitive in boom striking due to the special design of its head.

I hope I helped you

The wood blades are exactly what you should be using when learning to auto. The boom strike has very little to do with blades flexing and or blade grips that are a little sloppy, it has everything to do with pilot error. When you get to the bottom of the auto and have flared you have to give it some forward cyclic to keep the tail from hitting the ground first and causing a boom strike, it's just one of the many thing's that make auto's a challenge. This link will take you to Ron Lunds website, He has written a nice little article about learning to auto. http://www.ronlund.com/autos.htm

I have hit my boom three times, once with woodies and twice with fiberglass/carbon. I find that it has a lot to do with the cyclic input at touchdown, and with the bounces that result from forward speed in rough grass. Two times I just put a nick in the boom, and once I hit it pretty solid. The way I see it, you just had really bad luck with the link coming off. Even on my bad one, it just balled up and settled down. I would bet that if you hit hard enough for a boomstrike with woodies, then you probably hit hard enough for a boomstrike with fiberglass blades. Think of it this way; if you had been using expensive blades, you would have had more of a repair cost.
