most of those routers have both wireless
802.11 and a couple of wired ports.

You should first try to get the unit
going w/ the wired ports. Then
work on the 802 stuff.

usually, all you have to do is select the
proper type of connectivity (PPPoE
usually).

It *may* be that the service you have
requires the MAC address of the
object on the other side of the modem.
Previously the computer, now the
router. If so, you'll need to either contact
the service provider and give them the
new MAC addy of the router or many
routers allow you to 'clone' the MAC
address (of the computer) just for this
reason.

Your computer should also be set
to get the IP automatically (ala DHCP).

See if you can manually connect
to the Gateway, uusallly via a
web http interface at 192.x.x.x or 10.x.x.x
(see manual).

Take it step by step

Toadster,
You might have to power down your modem then also the router..

1. hook up the router to the modem
2. hook up the router (Hardwire) to the back of your computer (best to leave your computer off while hooking up the cable from the router)
3. power up the modem first, then router, then the computer.
4. If you haven't set up the network connection.. this is the best time to do it after the computer is booted
5. Go to your internet browser make sure your connection are set to LAN.
6. You might wanted to go to your router admin ( in case you didn't get the internet)
6. to access router admin, you might want to try 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.1 depends on what your manual said.
7 go through your setup sequence. then check if you are online.

by the way.. 802.11b is the 10/100 mbps , 802.11g is 54mbps..(Much faster)..

Good luck in your setup.

router

I am tring to get it to work with my computer wired right now. I haven't even got to try the wireless part of it yet.
1st I connected the router to the dsl modem and computer where the directions said to.
2. I contacted the router by starting my web browser and put 192.168.1.1 in the address
3. I did the setup wizard that came up. It asked several questions: what type of internet access, what type of log in PPPoE is what ISP said I had, my user name and password, IP address asigned automaticlly I called ISP and they said it was automatic
4. Then it was suppost to test the internet connection and it would fail and said PPPoE server not found Please check that ISP is using PPPoE
I called ISP and he thought that it was PPPoE

after the PPPoE screen, are you
selecting static or dynamic IP addressing?

what does the STATUS and SYSTEM
STATUS page say?

Here's a thought.

If you're going from the DSL modem to the wireless router, you may need to use a crossover cable.

That's the only possibility I could think of other than what was mentioned in previous posts. These wireless routers are usually pretty simple to set up.

good point.

you should see a WAN LED on the
router illuminated or flashing.

you also need to make sure the DSL
modem is connected to the routers
WAN port.

I am selecting dynamic, I called ISP and they said it was dynamic. Is there any way to check what it is for sure?

I'm sure its dynamic. they wouldn't
give you a static address unless you
requested (ie. $$$) one.

what is a crossover cable

its a cable that has reversed pin-outs
for transmit and receive signals

It's probably not required but it's not
100% sure.

If the WAN light is lighting up on the
router and if the ETH (or whatever)
LED on the modem are illuminated,
then that means the cable you have
is OK.

Cross Over Cable might be necessary for DSL..

Toadster25, a cross over cable is a NULL cable. Rx and TX lines are crossed. In other words the Tx line connects to the Rx line and the Rx line connects to the Tx line.

Check the following:
Make sure your SSID are the same on the router and computer.
Make sure the router has the same subnet mask as the computer.
Make sure all computers have a different IP address.(network)
Make sure all computers on your network have the same work group name.

Question: What OS are you running?
Does your ISP provide a IP address? or is it auto configured?

ISP said I have auto
I don't know what SSID is
I am only using one computer. No network. I just want to be able to move around in my house wireless because I don't want to run more phone lines.
I am using XP pro
all the lights on the router light up, Power, wireless, WAN, LAN1
I tried changing the MAC adress in the router to match my computer and that didn't seem to work either.
still need help Thanks Todd E.

I tried calling gatway and the guy transfered me to the wireless help number and they put me on hold and then I waited for about a half hour and gave up.

I guess that wasn't very clear. I am not sure how I got it working not how I got through to the tech support. I think what it was is insted of selecting PPPoE they had me try none(no user name and password). I think that must have been the problem because it is working now. I just found another wireless router close by and I was able to use their wireless to get on line. I guess I didn't even need to buy this thing now.

I am now wondering if there is any way to prevent other people from doing that to me. Do any of you enable the WEP? I tried to enable it but when I did then I couldn't even connect to my wireless router so I had to push the reset button and reset all the defalts. Any sugestions.

I did change the defalt password.
