My wife made a round trip flight Friday and has never flown before. Departed at about 8:30am and returned at about 11:00pm. When she came home she ask me a question about the plane that I couldn't tell her the answer to. Maybe you guys can tell me............

When they were getting ready to land, all of the main inside lights were turned off. Why is this? Is it a safety issue or does it have another purpose. By it being dark when they landed, I figured it may help the pilot see better. I don't know...............

this is std practice on all passneger aircraft if landing or taking off in the dark.
the reason ....your wife probably doesn't want to know........

it permits passengers and flight crews eyes to be dark adjusted so that in the event of an emergency your eyes will be better ready to see in the dark ....should the unthinkable happen.

you did ask....

Thank you very much for the info. I don't think she will mind me telling her that. She was just wondering why it was done so I told her I had just the place to find out! Thanks again.

I also think it has to do with the power demands. During takeoff and landing they want the engines to provide the most power to the vital electrical systems not the juice sucking A/C lights in the cabin.
I know a couple 37 jockeys I will ask them why that is on the checklist.
The dark thing is possible, but why do it in the daytime then?

Could it be for safety reasons? If there was a crash, having those unecessary electrical circuits "depowered" would be less likely to ignite fuel vapors?? Takeoffs / landings are the more critical times when things go wrong?

One good thing about being a retired airline pilot I do know the answer to the question. Crouisk is correct, it's for night vision adaptation. Although most airliners have an automatic electrical load shedding circuit that activates when the electrical generating capacity is seriously reduced, cabin lighting demands with all electrical sources available is negligible.

It is not due to electrical power demands:

when all things are running properly, there's bags of ac juice to spare. In most birds, for the odd events that knock out an ac bus or two.. and leave the ship a wee bit shy, galley power is usually shed (often automatically). Ovens, coffee makers and chillers are hogs, but the cabin lights don't eat that much.

I am not that familiar with the 737 but i do know that many passenger aircraft have APUs for all starting and inflight electrical power demands.

uh... the generators on the 737 could probably power a small town... We had 4 115/200 volt 3 phase 40 KVA monsters on the herk... and thats small by todays standards....
