I need to sort through the mess of chargers there are out there.I will end up getting a 5s4p Thunder power lithium poly, but i also want an all around charger.Anybody have some suggestions for what i should use?
Also would it be better to get 2s4p and 3s4p and put them together?

Orbit Pro, I couldn't be without mine. The latest 6.3 software is excellent.

Schulze! Do a search on www.ezonemag.com and I think you'll find the Schulze is a top quality, reliable, high-end charger. I've had a 636+RS for a few months and I'm very happy with it.

Best Charger?

Orbit Microlader V6.3 w/PC Interface:

Works great. Just a little dissapointed with the new lower constant voltage setting for Lead Acid Batteries.... 2.40 V/Cell (should be 2.45)! The picture shows when it was 2.45 V/cell when it worked much better (Versioin 6.21).

This charger works great with Lithiums!

Check out Futaba's new charger. This will be the best charger for LiPo's as well as all other batteries as well. http://at.robbe-online.net/cgi-bin/.../View/1&2DF1653

You can read about it from this link too. http://www.radiocontrolzone.com/for...threadid=155476

Not bad looking charger, I wonder how much it will cost? It doesn't charge as many cells or charge as many amps as the futaba charger, but if it's half the cost of the Futaba it would be a great charger for the price. Where did you find that charger from?

Huh? What's the max wattage out on the Futaba? Early reports are that the Orinoco is going to be at least twice the price of the Futaba. However, it has four ports so even if it's twice the price it can do four times as many packs at the same time.

The suggested retail price of the Futaba charger is going to be $627.66. With the Futaba charger it says you can charge up to 6 battery packs at the same time. You can charge from 1-36 cells. It can discharge at 40 amps and charge at up to 20 amps. Charge outlets for transmitter and receiver batteries are on one side; ports for connecting the charger to the Thermo Stand, printer or PC are on the other side. It has 5 built in fans and a back lit screen. You can read all about it from this link, it has all the chargers specs listed. http://at.robbe-online.net/cgi-bin/.../View/1&2DF1653

I read the specs, where does it say you can do 6 packs at the same time? Nor does it say what the total wattage output is (i.e., what is the max charge current at the max cell count?) In other words is the 20A output at 1 cell or 36 cells? Not many chargers can do thier highest current out at their max cell count.

Charges from 1 to 8 Tx/Rx cells, as well 1 to 36 cells. That means it charges up to SIX battery packs at the same time with real-time plotting on the LCD screen.

I just wrote down what the specs said on this web site. http://www.wildhobbies.com/news/def...&articleid=1172

It also says this from the Robbe web site

Quote
The unit is capable of charging packs at up to 20 A and discharging packs at up to 40 A, although these maximum currents vary according to cell count and battery type. This means that the CDR 5000 is suitable for all battery types which can be charged or discharged using one of the processes described above - and all this with a range of 0.1 to 62 Volts!

Hi,

just look at the pdf on robbes site.

0-18V 12A
18-27V 8A
27-36V 6A
36-45V 5A
45-54V 4A
>54V 3A

http://data.robbe-online.net/robbe_...100_1-F1653.pdf

The discharging rates are much more interesting:

25A@12V, 15A@20V, 7.5A@40V, that's 300W compared to 10-30W on the usual chargers!
5A discharge and 2A charge on the RX/TX out is very competitive as well.

Hi,

actually I'm looking at a new charger myself.

The futaba one is promising but almost twice the price of an Orbit, and I doubt it wil have the automatic nicd/nimh programs which lower the current towards full charge... For NiCd the German chargers are just the best. I guess that's because they had to deal with noise regulation for a long time.

The plus of the Futaba unit are the discharging rates, but who needs that with Lipolys? The other advantage seems to be the accuracy of the voltage measurments, which is really important for lipo packs, but that hardly convinces me to pay twice the price. Especially if you look at the charging rates, the Orbit Pro has much higher wattage there (275W vs ~200W).

Don't forget the Orbit pc software, might be another reason to go for it... save diagrams of your rx packs and check the from time to time is a great plus in security.

btw, I ruled out the Schulze:

- no reflex modes
- 2nd port is to weak anyway
- pc interface 50 vs 30 eur
- updates 30 vs 10eur

So after one update and with pc software the Orbit is cheaper! At least here...
The robbe units are usually quite nice for the price, unfortunately they have no lipo upgrades yet.

You asked what the BEST charger is. If you want to see people who are serious with chargers, go to any of the F5B events. Schulze 8-936 usually is the most popular charger out there. And after going through several chargers such as Litco4 and smaller Schulze, I can safely say the 8-936 is leap and bound ahead its competitions.

Here is a discussion about good/bad on the charger:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...threadid=146532

Only catch is, they still don't have the Lipo firmware upgrade yet.

Steph, Have you used an Orbit Pro???

Just because "other people" (whoever they are) use the most expensive charger on the market, doesn't mean that it's the best.

I haven't used the 8-936, but I would surely buy 2 Orbit Pro's and a set of CF blades before I would buy a 8-936.
