I just got my Raptor 50 kit in and started assembly. I have the main mechanics done and am quite impressed with the quality of this kit, especially at $284. They even molded governor magnet mounts in the bottom of the fan.

I had one problem so far, the auto unit was a little tight. It would not spin freely. I tapped it on the top and bottom with the handle of a screwdriver and it loosened up.

I think I now understand why some folks are having trouble with their Raptors, the instructions leave a little to be desired.

tight auto unit

I had to file (thin the thickness) of one of the snap rings on my auto hub to get it to spin freely. They must have changed the ring groove locations slightly to answer the "play problem" of the original 30 kits. I would rather they left the play - it's easier to adjust with shims.

IMPORTANT!! STEP NOT IN INSTRUCTIONS!

One thing that is still not in the instructions is in the tail assembly. There is a set screw that you end up having left over. The instructions do not have one in the tail diagrams or tell you where it goes. The people who are not installing this are having major issues. This set screw goes in the end of the tail shaft to secure the pin that holds the gear on. Please make sure you put that set screw in and loctite it as well. If you do not install this set screw the pin will work back out and start tearing up the inside of your tail case. There was a thread on this issue about a week ago. Seems Ace is now including the set screw with the 50 kits, but still not mentioning them in the instructions.

I Was Lucky

I just finished building my 50 and if it wasn't for a friend who has a Raptor 60 who told me about that set screw I would have left it out.

I put the elevator a-arms on backwards because it does not say anywhere in the manual that they are one-directional. I got to the field for my initial flight and they were both broken at the ball link and they popped right out. I had not even flown yet. Had I not checked my links out before flying I would have been in serious trouble.

So now I have to wait to for some new a-arms to arrive and hope that there is nothing else that I did wrong because the manual did not mention it.

I think it is pretty pitiful that ACE and TT make a beginner's helicopter and include an instruction manual that makes very little sense AND leaves out vital information. I would have been glad to pay $10 more for the kit to pay for an updated manual.

Set Screw

Found that last night while putting the tail together. Like I said, the instructions leave a little to be desired. If it had not been for my prior building experience with XCell's I would have been in trouble. Not much mention of loctite, super glue, lube etc in places that should have it.

The supplemental instructions by fritzthecat are worth reading. He did a good job on them.
