Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > Any one running digital temp gauge?

What temp should I exspect to see if I ran a digital temp gauge on my OS60 WC. I'm thinking of buying a temp sensor that the model car guys use made by a company called Venom. Its smaller than a box of matchs and has its own power supply. It would be mounted onboard and records the current and max temp via wire wrapped around the base of the cylinder head. Its cheap and I thought it would be a good idea for safer tuning of my engine. Agree/Disagree?

G'day mate, were you at the Wagga FF?

My instructor tried the gauge on my heli years ago when I was learning to hover. It was useless as we couldn't read it out in the hover, don't think it records the average & max which is probably what we needed for it to work.

Giday Taipan, no i wasn't at the Wagga FF, bit far for me to go from Adelaide.
The temp gauge I'm thinking of using does record the max temp.
Here's the web page for some more details
www.venom-racing.com
Its selling for around $66 locally in Adelaide or $40 mail order from Perth.

Oh well. Do you know Jamie Wilson? He lives about 2 hours north of Adelaide in the country. I saw him fly at Wagga & he's easily the best 3D pilot in Aussie, did Chaos, Funnels, Rolling Circles, 3D Autos & more. Great guy.

Really? I didn't know the gauges were that cheap. First price that came into my mind was $300. Then thought that was too much & $100 was more like it.

I'll buy a Venom as am hopeless at tuning my engines. However like you asked, we need to know what temp to run our engines.

Isn't hovering & FFF two different temps? The first is at half throttle & the 2nd at full.

I have an OS32, 50, 61 & am planning on purchasing a 91!

Don't know Jamie personnaly, but i have heard how good he is, from what i understand, he was self taught.

From what ive read on other posts about engine tuning, about 225c is the best temp for power, once you start getting towards 300c, the power will drop off. I have read that one bloke recommends only around 185c for the OS61.

Im just going to use the temp gauge as a reference, and just have a fiddle. It will be interesting to compare hover temps to ff. Im thinking that hovering will actually be hotter than fwd flight.

Learn a very valuable lesson last weekend. I have been running my OS61 way to rich, at least 1/2 a turn on the main needle. Suddenly my Rappy60 is a lot smother and the tail doesn't vibrate around. The best temp seems to be around 60-70 degrees C with the engine running. When the engine is shut down (No cooling air flow) the temp will rise to over 90 degrees C. I did run the engine too lean experimenting and it did cutout in flight, I stuffed the auto with around 100 bucks of damage
Live and learn, the max temp on that run was over 125 degrees C
Final needle settings are 3/4 of a turn on the main needle, 1/4 turn on the mid, and 2 turns on the idle. This is for 15% nitro and a Hatori 3D pipe. I have left the temp gauge on the heli as a tuning aid and will be buying one for every heli and plane that i use
