Some people on here use PC power supplies that can be picked up cheap. Do a search and see what you come up with.

Yeh i looked into doing that but i thought it was frowned upon as the supply isn't 'clean' enough.......

The manual that came with my schulze goes to great length warning about it and says it may damage it so i thought about going for a pucka unit.

I have been using one for a while, it is a really excellent soild bit of kit and it beats the hell out dragging the extension lead out to the car to constantly recharge the car battery. I first learnt of its existance when I saw a photo of it in the Minicopter Joker build CD - bought one immediately. It's the Schulze-reccomended pucker job for powering high-output battery chargers. Particularly with big LiPo charging it takes the worry out of feeding the system with a poor-quality suppy and potentially dangerous consequences of confusing the charger.

Check with www.flightpower.co.uk for current pricing

Richard,

I guess you are refering to this:

This is a 10A rated supply (and no 4 of them together would not match the spec of the MAAS).

Please folks (vested interest aknowledged) there are no shortcuts with high-power electronics. The above is great for light-weight applications, not for plugging in a Schulze 330d and then a big battery on the other end, something will give.

Example: to use some round figures: A 24V battery charged at 6 amps will pull 12 amps + anything up to 40% in efficency losses i.e. circa 16 Amps from a 12 V supply. Some of our batteries reach peak charge at over 40Volts pulling 6 Amps via the Schulze 636+RS - hence the MAAS sps-9400.

I agree with Julian.
I am also using the MAAS SPS-9400 along with a shultze 6-636 to charge my 10s4p LIPO packs.
Even charging at 3.5 Amps this charger draws in excess of 10 Amps,
LIPO's are to expensive to take chances with, so it is worth spending a little more on charging equipment.

Hi TJK_Heli

Here is a power supply you can buy in the US that will ship international. They have a 25amp (MFJ-4225MV) and a 40amp (MFJ-4245MV). They operate on 120v or 240v. I use the 45amp with my two 636 charges.

You kidding me? If it's good enough to run a PC it's better than most crappy PSU you'd get at the local electronics store. Adding a couple of resistors is not going to add much if any noise.

Hi Julian,

Yes that's the power supply that I use with a Robbe Infinity II. I have never had any problems so far. Is this luck?

Richard

P.S. that MASS power supply looks the business.

i use a pc power supply. i've made 2, one for me and one for a friend. it's very easy and i havnt ever had any problem with it. neither one needed resisters to make a 12v output.

Actually, most PC power supplies are actually quite crappy. Additionally, not even primarilly designed for 12V, they're designed around providing 5V. I wouldn't even consider using a PC power supply with any decent charger that requires over 5A.

The previously mentioned MFJ is decent and the Astron line is highly recommended.

I chose my words quite carefully when I wrote "..takes the worry out.."

Like anything in this hobby, if you genuinely know what you're doing and you have access to the correct equipment then there is no God-given law why you can't build a satisfactory power supply from cheap parts. You're unlikey to produce something as elegant as the MAAS unit as a one-off without spending more money on parts (case, screen, PCB etc) than the off the shelf unit and you will almost certainly spend 5 times the cost of the MAAS in terms of time, but that depends entirely on how you value your time - maybe soldering and oscilloscopes is relaxing part of the hobby for some, I can respect that. Personally I'd rather be flying.

Whichever way you go about powering a charger for big LiPo packs it's important the end result is right. With big LiPo packs anything except a natively smooth car battery or fully tested (under load) smooth power supply feeding the charger is a safety concern.

The MAAS device is simply an elegant means of disposing of the problem in one hit i.e. it's guaranteed fit for purpose straight out of the box.

Richard wrote: I have been using xyz PSU 'with the Robbe Infinity II. I have never had any problems so far. Is this luck?'

The answer is I have no idea because it depends on too many factors, including how you define "no problems" and "luck", if the question was re-phrased: 'I'm using the MAAS SPS-9400 to power just about any RC battery charger charging just about any battery, including big LiPo packs with a suitable charger, is this OK' I could categorically state: YES.

That's the point I'm getting at regards worry free solution.

I have just bought one of the MAAS supplies from Flightpower. Let me say that it is a high quality piece of kit and inspires total confidence. I have mine connected to two Schulze 330d chargers each charging TP 4S4P 8000 packs.

For what it's worth, I have used the little "UltraPower" power supply from Midlands and got frustrated with it. Maybe I was unlucky but mine will not deliver a true 10A. In fact, the output is fitted with a 7.5A blade fuse which I have had blow regularly when trying to power a Supernova charging 12 x 3000 nimh.
