Kyosho Caliber 30 & 60 - Concept - Nexus > 515mm Blades on a Nexus

I picked up a Nexus used and it has the Heli-Max 515mm blades on it. What is the differance between these and the stock blades?

Nexus Blades

The difference is that the ones you now have (515mm) are 15mm shorter than the stock (530mm) ones.

Man, I am an Engineering student, I can count Seriously, thanks for the post. I mean what is the difference in the flight characteristics?

Which engine do you have in your Nexus? The OS32 SXH ABC engine, or the OS32-H ringed engine?

The 515's won't auto very well (the nexus isn't a great auto'er with the 530's either) and you'll have to run a higher headspeed or more pitch to get the same lift as larger blades. It will be a little less stable, but more responsive. The Nexus has limited pitch range available. You might not be able to give the nexus enough pitch to take full advantage of the engine's power if you are running an SXH, and still have much negative pitch.

It sounds like you are relatively new to this. My advice is to fly the Nexus as is. Learn to hover with it, and progress into forward flight. At some point you might break the blades. If so, buy the bigger set.

If (more like when) you crash the Nexus hard, add up all the parts you broke, realize that it is not the cheapest heli to repair, and buy something better, like a Raptor, Sceadu, or Hawk IV that has cheaper parts, is nicer, or is more capable.

The nexus flys reasonably well for a beginner helicopter. It isn't any hard to fly than any other heli. It isn't as responsive or capable as some of the more recently designed machines.

Thanks, John Cadwell

I have the OS32 SXH ABC.

I am pretty new. I started flying last month and can hover perfectly fine and I am into forward flight now. So I learned to fly on a less stable machine than stock? That sounds good to me.

I already have plans for a new heli. When this one become a dirt dart I will get a Raptor 30 or Sceadu 30. So... which one is better? From my research it seems as if they are almost the same. The raptor seems cheaper to fix. Is that true?

You just opened a huge can of worms I have a sceadu. I love it. Other people have Raptors, they love them. The sceadu is more expensive, but in my opinion a little higher quality, and the support from MRC/Altech and Jeff Green (the distributor) is second to none. The Raptor has some issues that steered me away from it. The sceadu had some gear issues, but those have been resolved by MRC, and it has been flawless other than that.

As a general trend, people are trying to sell raptors, and buy sceadus. Perhaps this is just because the sceadu is new. Perhaps not.

Thanks, John Cadwell

Well I tell you what. I like the Sceadu. I am drawn to the raptor only because parts seem cheap. What about the overheating problems with the Sceadu? I do think the Sceadu is of a little better quality.

The parts costs are pretty close. The overheating problem doesn't seem to be much of a problem. A fan shroud is available from heliproz, and I have it installed. No problems. My engine runs cool with 10%, and has plenty of power. Ridiculous compared to the 32 in my Hawk. As far as I can tell it is an overglorified waste of time. I have not flown it in really hot temps (a few days in the 70's and 80's) so I can't vouch for 100+ degree days.

Thanks, John Cadwell

sorry

I wasn't trying to be cute I thought you ment the length. The flight differences would be with the 515's: poorer autos, higher head speed (less weight and load) less lift for the same amount of pitch due to the reduced blade area, and I am a Mechanical Engineer.

I know you were trying to be helpful I was just being silly. Thanks for the help. The higher head speeds make the heli more responsive don't they (cyclic)?

Mechanical Engineering is the filed I am aiming for. That or Electrical, but I think I would enjoy being a Mechanical Engineer more.
