e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Fast charging new Sub "C" GP3300mAh packs.

Hi,

I done the first two charges of my new 12 cell "GP3300mAh" Logo 10 packs with the Orbit charger in the Auto delta peak fast charge mode.
I didn't realize that I should have slow charged them the first time, as I did think it was necessary with the newer battery these days. I guess I should have checked here first.
They seem to charge up ok, although one pack (pack #2) did get extremely warm. One pack (pack #1) had 3420mA put into it and the other (pack #2) got to about 3100 - 3200mA (cant remember exactly how much), this was the one that got really warm/hot, but I did use the higher peak (5.0mV/cell) setting on this one though, the other I did at the lower setting (3,5mV/cell).
The second charge put in about the same capacity or bit more than the first charge put in the pack #1 and Pack #2 (the one that got real warm) took about 3450 - 3500mA this time.

Have I decreased their life span or capacity by Auto fast charging them for their first charge?

Is there anything I can do to fix this, like discharge them and doing a low rate of about 0.3amp Reflex charge etc, or is it too late?

Thanks, Hayden.

Sounds like the batteries are getting broken in. Fast charging first is not likely to cause harm to the cells, in fact yours seems to have gotten better.

I would caution against reflex charging NIMH cells, this should never be done, it it only useful on nicads.

OK I race RC cars and use GP3300's. I have been running them for a while now(before they were released to the public to use) I always charge at 6 amps. Fastg peak charging will not hurt the packs. Discharge at a close rate of discharge as if it were in the helicopter being used. IN cars we discharge at 30 amps on bulb dischargers. 3300's do not like to be stored completely empty. SO if you do kill them all the way, recharge about 1/3 full for storage. Nimh packs like to be charged more then one time a day also. They actually get better the 2nd or 3rd charge of the day. Nimh packs should not get hot. They may be a little warm to the touch but not hot. Discharging is very important. Try not to use a charger or cycler to discharge. IF you charge a pack, fly it until it is close to dumping. Then discharge on bulbs. When using bulbs to not let the bulbs go out completely. AS they start to dim pull them off the bulbs. Letting the packs stay on bulbs while dimming puts too much strain on a battery.

I hope this helps. If you have any other questions I will be glad to help you out! Good luck

Hi,

Thanks guys.

The reason I charged it the way I did was because I wasn't real familiar with the charger as I had only just got it. So I thought the safe way to go would be to set it to auto and let the charger work out what rate to charge it, as I didn't know what rate they could be charged at.

Cheers, Hayden.

This time I charged pack# 1 at C/10 on the Easy charge mode at .30Amp (300mAh). It put in 3900mA after almost 13 hours, when I stopped it. The pack was only slight warm to touch. I think it would have kept going until the the charger stopped at 14 hours (the max length in time).

Would it have overcharged the pack or is it possible to over charge at that rate?

Should I have let it go and see if it did stop on it's own before the timer of 14 hour ran out or should I have stopped it at 11 Hours?

Thanks, Hayden.
