e-JR Voyager E > Going from Nitro to Electric....

Hello,
I have been thinking about moving to an electric ship as apposed to my current nitro ship.

I am currently running a Raptor30 OS32.

I have been wanting to get a bigger ship, and I thought about the Voyager 50 E machine.

I have some initial questions that I am hoping you can help me with:

1) What kind of power source are used in the helicopter?

2) Are there usually seperate batteries used to power the motor ( blades ) and the Rx (servos and gyro) ?

3) What method of charging is used at the field and at home.

4) What type of charger and batteries are needed to maintain a 10-15min flight time?

As mentioned, I am looking to go with Electric instead of nitro. What kind of cost is usually associated with this move?

Thanks for your time,
looking forward to your feedback.

Hey Dean,

Do you have a link to this Voyager 50 E machine?

I've never seen or heard of anything from JR in an electric other than the Voyager E (sub 30 sized) and the new ParkMite (I think a micro). There have been conversions of the Venture 30CP to electric with fair results but nothing in kit form that I'm aware of.

As for a couple of your questions, I think I can provide some answers.

Question 1 - I can't answer because I've never seen or heard of the machine.

Question 2 - Normally the RX, servos and motor share the battery pack through a BEC (battery eliminator circuit). The BEC may be part of the ESC (electronic speed control) or a separate component depending on the ESC you're using.

Question 3 - I use the same charger at home that I use at the field, a Schulze 6-330d. At the field I use my car's battery as a power source and at home I use a seperate power supply.

Question 4- A good charger is a necessity. There are many and which one you use will depend in part on the battery type you use. As for battery types....to power a large heli for 15 minutes of serious flying is probably going to require Lithium Polymer batteries. The particulars for the battery will depend a lot on the motor you run and the current draw (among other things).

As for cost, get out your wallet because it won't be cheap. I fly a modified Voyager E (the smaller sub 30 sized JR) and the motor/ESC combo cost me about $250, the 3s4p Lithium battery was $230 and the charger was $179. Total cost just for power (on a small heli), approx $659. The cost will rise on the larger e-helis as the motor/esc prices and battery prices go up.

On the plus side...you never have to wipe off fuel residue, you can fly almost anywhere there's room without upsetting the neighbors, depending on the battery/motor setup you get great flight times (I get almost 30 minutes of good flying) and I never, ever have to buy fuel again.

Hope that helps some.

And the E-helis are smooth, no vibrations from the IC engine trying to beat the heli apart.

They are clean, smooth, quiet and you can actually hear the blade noise which makes it worth it in it's self.

As Ralph said, once you get through the initial expense, thry are great.

Currently using 3300 nmh packs. Lipo's should be available in May for 20 to 30 minute flight times..See link for info..

I'll bite... I think the idea is pretty cool and I might be interested in buying the conversion components. As it stands, the $1450. price tag for the heli is a bit steep for me.

Especially when the new ION will soon be available for less and is designed from the ground up for "E" flight.

The Joker while a bit ($300) more expensive is way more helicopter than ANY conversion, (excepting maybe it's cousin the Henslit) again built from the ground up as an "E" heli.

Looking at your site the concept of a modified JR big heli is great, but it is a conversion, not an original piece.
