e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > proper way of discharging?

Hey guys,

I use NiCd and NiMH battery packs for my helis. I would like to stick with them for another year. (You know I don't want to spend $200 just to upgrade to those Lion or Lipo monsters.)
So, my problem is the battery maintenance. I frequently discharge NiCd packs and do that only once in a month for NiMH's before charging them.
I don't have those fancy computerized chargers and am using standard overnight chargers. To discharge the packs, I leave them on till they have no juice. Couple times, I left them on for a long time and when I checked them, they were flat dead. I mean they were zilch; the gauge wouldn't move when hookep up to a tester. Then I fully charged them.
My question is that if this discharging is harmful for the battery packs?
If so, what is the proper way of discharging the packs(NiCd,NiMH) without discharger.?

Any help will greatly be appreciated.
Thanks
Alex

Hey Alex!

Generally speaking, discharging a NiCd pack down to nothing doesn't do much harm. I wouldn't make a habit of it though. If the cells in the pack are significantly out of balance, this could be life-limiting. Discharging NiMH packs down to nothing is definitely life-limiting and should be avoided.

Hmmm. How to discharge packs properly without a discharger. That's a tough one. Years ago I used to do it with a load resistor and a voltmeter. I disconnected the load when the voltage started to drop below about 1V/cell. This method was great for exposing my lack of attention.

If these are motor flight packs you are talking about, the best way to discharge them is in the aircraft.
