Please be careful carbon dust if very harmful to breath and touch.

It will easily travel thru your hot air heating and cause irritation to children.

Some are more suseptable than others.

Be careful and have fun.

What are the most affective means of control? Is a shop vac adequate for controlling dust? I've been hesitant to use one. I cut inside an acrylic box lined with thin dropcloth, then clean that out with a respirator on, then throw the drop cloth with dust away, and finish with a rag that gets thrown away.

Thanks, John Cadwell

Dust Removal

You can use a shop vac but the paper filter is not fine enough and will blow the particles all over your house.
Check in the hardware stores they sell a aux filter which can be put on top of the paper element to increase the filtration.
Even at that you must wear a particle mask and keep kids out.
Blow your nose and if there is black soot, the vac and mask are not protecting you.

We use a 15hp vac system and there is leakage as well

I willing to take it on good faith that any particulate dust is not great for breathing, and when I cut out any parts in CF I wear a good respirator and clean the area immediately.

Can anyone point me to any actual studies/information on the toxicity of this stuff (maybe a MSDS?) I mean, will I fall over dead from getting just one particle into my lungs or is it like coal miners getting black lung disease after decades?

This hobby is already breaking me financially; it'd be shame to have it cause me to contract a fatal disease as well!

For Raw Carbon Fiber Material
http://www.2spi.com/catalog/msds/msds11431.html

Make note that they say to use "Respirator hood".

CF panels are made with polyester resin systems, so you have to take that into consideration. In fact it looks like the risks are similar to cutting fiberglass, same precautions, no magic bullet that's going to strike you dead over cutting fiberglass or other materials.

Materials which will kill you(slowly) by inhaling minimal amounts of particles do exist, such as beryllium.

As crazy as it may sound. The safest way to work with composite dust is with water cooling rinse. Just like you'd use for cutting metal. water is safe to cured materials.
