<<...pretty good for Doom...>>

Yeah; that music still runs through my head from time to time...

Say, Monk, I was in Best Buy today and saw a pre-order form for Doom 3. Is it a re-release, or something new?

Now that Half-Life 2 has been put back AGAIN...

Wow.. didnt know these 386's were around in 1989 already. My first comp was much like the one in the picture.. a 386SX 40MHz but I didnt buy it till 1993, for about 1/10th of that price.
And that was including a SUPER VGA monitor..

Halflife 2 put back again? What's the release date now? Last thing I heard it was going to be April.

By the time half life and doom get released, hardware capable of running them efficiently might actual exist

In college (about 87-88) I was in a business machine class and remember coming to class one day and there was this HUGE case sitting in the corner with its own A/C system and about a billion wires coming from it.

They practically had an electrified fence around the thing as you were barely allowed to look at it, little else touch it. We had been told that the college had purchased a wildly exotic system that ALL the business courses could now be run from one machine.

40 Mb Hardrive!!!

No telling what that cost then.

Amazing how things have changed. What will we see in just the next 10-15 years?? Almost scary.

Well.. my first machine was a 486 so I can't get into the "i've run an older machine than you" debate, however I do remember thinking along the lines of "100mb? DANG! what on earth would you need all that space for" "8mb of RAM? You GOTTA be kidding me" 14.4's were just coming out and that was the thing to have.. Later on in college we had just unpacked out Spank'n new P200 and I was in Awe.. Screaming powerhouse of a box.. Can you imagine once speeds hit 1 ghz? I knew it would happen evenutally but I couldn't fathom it at the time. Looking through old mags in my friends "library" certianly takes me back. Lots of ad's very much like that one..

My prediction for the future.. Real time photorealistic displays will be commonplace. Interface will become more natural albeit slowly, the ol' keyboard/mouse combo will go the way of the dodo.. Displays will intragrate themselves into everything, you won't have "a computer" the computer will be around you. Perhaps you'll have a master terminal, however everything will talk to everything else. Voice recongnition, visual recognition, and action prediction will be our use of the computer. Instant access to any bit of information you can ask for will be available at anytime from anyplace just by asking (or thinking) the right question. I'm pretty excited, my lifetime will be filled with wonders my parents could never have imagined.
Perhaps the ultimate wonder will happen in my lifetime. Jesus may return and all of our accomplishments and technology will be made a moot point.

Keep your eyes peeled folks.. We are in for a wild ride.

There is a new version of doom coming out, I bet it won't be as playable as the original though. let's face it, there's alot of first person games out at the min and to me they pretty much all play the same. I loved half-life, battlefield 42, medal of honour and veit cong etc.....but it's getting a little hard for developers to find something original. Max payne is one of my favs too even though it is 3rd person

Remember when doom 3d came out? the only compition was wolfenstein so what a step up doom was We used to play it at university over the network, trying to hide in dark corners so the local computer geeks didn't kick us off the computers for playing games. Oh and quake on the 386's what a game...

Ah, fond memories.........

They're talking September now, Mangusta.

I had to upgrade my system when Opposing Force came out; from what my programmer/geek brother tells me, I'll have to do the same for HalfLife2.

I don't care; its worth it. I still get a kick out of playing the original HalfLife. The grandson and I spend hours on it, Opposing Force, and Blue Shift.

Doom introduced me to the fun of first-person shoot-em-ups, but I think Monk is right; thery have gone about as far as they can, concept-wise. I just got the PC version of Halo for the grandson, who plays it on his XBox. Its okay, but I'll stay with HalfLife and Comanche IV for now...
