| The bottom shapes are slightly smaller than the top shapes. If you measure the volumes of the bottom shapes and ad them together, then measure the volume of the top shape, you will find that the volume of the top shape is that of the bottom shape minus the volume of the empty square.
The thick black outlines obscure the differences in the shapes so that when you pile them together, they look the same.
