I know this has been here once before... But, I could not find it during a search. Who can explain the answer for me? -Steve

Ther green blocks have 8 squares and the orange have 7. the others are all the same and fit perfectly. If you look the red and green are similar in shape with all sides equal, but the other 2 are shaped diffenently

Well the red's taller than the green so for it too fit on top the orange has to move down. The green isn't as long as the red so it can go on the end of the bottom rom and the orange can fit in behind it.

it's simple to see but difficult to explain.

the hypotenuse isn't straight. the red triangle has a slope of 3/8, the green triangle has a slope of 2/5. the upper and lower, assemblies aren't the same. i've seen the same trick with a 64 unit square rearranged into a 65 unit rectangle.

yeah, the slopes of the two triangles is slightly different, as Preluder01 is saying

Its an optical illusion...

The top triangle has a concave curve (hypontenuse) and the bottom one has a convex curve...

there IS a size diference .. look at the 6th vertical line from the left, and see the space diference in the traingle intersect ... its enough ofset to equal the area of 1 square ..

The bottom shapes are slightly smaller than the top shapes. If you measure the volumes of the bottom shapes and ad them together, then measure the volume of the top shape, you will find that the volume of the top shape is that of the bottom shape minus the volume of the empty square.

The thick black outlines obscure the differences in the shapes so that when you pile them together, they look the same.

Try it.... tis true.
