CAD - Engineering - Technical > New upload file extension for cad drawings

Thanks to Ozzy Pilot for suggesting that I add a new file format to upload and view cad drawings.

In My Gallery you now can upload “.html” type files.

Below is a SolidWorks eDrawing html file that I uploaded into my gallery.

http://runryder.com/helicopter/gall...ashout_arm.html

This is what it looks like when you get it working.

That is fine and all but others can't use or modify the geometry. Itr can only be viewed. Is there a way (I have Solidworks also) to do more with an E-drawing, or is sending it as a file and opening it in the native program (or importing to other prog) the only way?

Info on eDrawings.......

To let everyone know, I am a Certified SolidWorks Perfessional. I have been selling, training and supporting SolidWorks for over years and I work for the oldest SolidWorks reseller in the Great Lakes Region. If you have ANY question regarding SolidWorks, please feel free to send them my way.

The purpose of an eDrawing is to communicate in a secure way, so others can view, measure(if you allow them) and markup your part, assembly or drawing without being able to import it into any CAD system and reverse engineer it.

There is also an option upon saving the eDrawing to 'allow save as .stl', which would allow the recipient to save the eDrawing file to a rapid prototyping type file. This would allow you to import the file into SolidWorks and work with it, but I don't recommend this due to the nature of the .stl file.......it is all 'faceted' data, and not very clean.

Thanks,

As Dudeness says you can't use the geometry.
eDrawing html type files are good for exchanging ideas, but from the posts on this forum so far we are going to want to exchange data files also.

Zip file format will allow all the other formats to be used, but
How do you post zip files?

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Tim.

Zip Files

So we can zip a .SLDPRT file
or a .SLDASM file
and send it zipped to our own gallery.

NOTE:

If you do a .SLDASM file (an assembly or a sub assembly) You MUST also have every .SPDPRT part file there, and zipped with it, or solidworks will not be able to open the assembly correctly.

Thank You,
Jerry

Perhaps my question wasn't clear. I was asking about manipulating the file IE: measuring, changing, importing . Sending various file types is not the problem. Being able to do something other than VIEW is what I was asking about.

Sorry for not being clearer.

No, you were clear........

DUDENESS,

I was simply explaining that the intent of an eDrawing is so others CAN'T open or manipulate their parts.

Anyone that has the ability to publish an eDrawing certainly has the ability to save as .step, Parasolid, ACIS, .iges........and a variety of other files that can be imported and used.

In addition to what Torkroll said, due to associativity, if you open the .sldasm (SolidWorks assembly) you must also have the parts for that assembly.

However, anyone that has SolidWorks 2003 or 2004 can also save their assemblies as multi body PARTS (.sldprt). In this case the recipient of the .sldprt file would have what appears to be an assembly......only it is a single file. The recipient would also have the ablity to save the multi body part file as an assembly if necessary.

This would give the creator the security and integrity of their work because this is the equilivent of saving as a neutral file type......in other words, the multi body part wouldn't have any history.....just geometry.

Anyway, I thought that might interest some of you.

Thanks,

DUDENESS,

If you have Solidworks you can go to this link in my gallery and download the zip files of the small parts.

Parts in my gallery, Zip files towards bottom of page

Once you do that you can change them as you wish.

Hope this helps

Is there any way to view Autodesk (autocad) drawings, or is this something that will only work for Solidworks?

There are free downloadable viewers for AutoCAD drawings. Voloview (spelling?) is one that comes to mind.

eDrawings will do it too.

You can download eDrawings from SolidWorks for free and it has the ability to read SolidWorks native files, eDrawings that are saved without the viewer impeded and Native AutoCad .dwg and .dxf files.

Download eDrawings
