Nice...

I noticed the option of buying without the motor and controller.
Anybody experiment with using one of the outrunner type motors and what gearing did they use?
Canopy looks GREAT.

Oh yeah. I have run five different Actros and three different LRK's in my prototypes. They work very well and you can use just a single stage gear train. The "heli only" kit that will be released later will have a listing of motors/controllers/gear ratios that can be used. This kit will not be as good a deal as the full kit as the user will have to buy the electrics himself. But, for the guy who may already have something he wants to try or wants to experiment...

Chriss,

Was the hacker the clear winner for performance? I would imagine the choice of which motor to go with may have depended on a lot more than raw performance considering it's being included with the kit, and is a custom version. Care to share what's special about the custom hacker?

Interesting I wonder why they went with the Extreme head and not the Tempest???

Probably cost reduction. Being that the Tempest 3D head is $300 more then the Extreme head, the kit alone would cost $1500. Nobody said you couldn't special order one with the Tempest head though.

Yes the Hacker was the clear winner in terms of performance, by a small margin. It is a good deal more efficient than the other motors tested. The Hackers are also available in really tight winding changes (like 8 to 24 I think). With most other motors, if you change the motor by one or two winds, you get something way different. With the Hacker the steps are small, thus allowing you to really tweek your setup.

Also Hacker has about the best product support anyone in the USA could ask for, Aero Model. They stock hundreds of motors at all times and can perform repair services.

Hacker also has a really good speed control. It starts every time, works with just about any motor you could think of, is easy to program, has nice programming features and is inexpensive.

Travis

Well put! The Tempest head would have bumped both the cost AND the weight up a good bit. That said, this is something I want to try soon.

By the way, unless you have a really bad crash and totally squash everything, there is a good chance the batteries can be rebuilt. Say for example, the heli went in on it's left cheek, most likely only the front two "blocks" of the left side battery would be damaged. Charlie has been known to rebuild packs. FWIW...

That's great so long as the thing doesn't go into thermal meltdown before you get there.

Seriously that is one of the major reasons I am staying away from the LiPo's. Too much at risk in my case.
Soon as they make them a bit more crash worthy I will be on the "wagon" with LiPo's.

I've seen a couple of lipo crashes now and the batteries were only deformed. They were of course not usable anymore (the squashed cells that is) but there was no shorting within the pack and nothing went critical. These instances could of course have gone differently and I'm sure for some, it has.

Problem is; with the amount of energy stored in the pack, if you dead short it, sparks are gonna fly, heat is gonna build and somethings gonna burn. And we need this energy level for the flying we want to do.

I've also seen gas helicopters catch fire in a crash. I've heard that turbines are pretty much always reduced to a smoking crater on impact, matters not to me, I still think they're cool and I'll never give up my nitro ships.

Is there the possibility for danger here, yup no doubt. Is it manageable? Absolutley.

Correct...

Chris,
You are correct. My point was not to say they are dangerous, but the $$$ is just to high right now for me.
I can get enough performance out of a 32 cell NiMh pack to do the job.

Will there be a conversion kit to upgrade it to an OS or YS 91?
Bet that question hasn't been asked.

I wasn't serious about the conversion kit......It was a little piece of humor on my part. I felt it was an ironic question.

Not surprisingly, people ARE asking for conversion kits to convert their gas helis to electric....

But I bet by the time you bought the "conversion" it would only be 400.00 or so less than the full kit.
There is just waayyy too much that looks different about the ION from the Extreme.

Ok so tell the MA gang to get the release date out so we can order them.

M.A. has always taken orders direct from the public, but they charge retail. They have to do this in order to keep the LHS' in business. If you want one of the first 100 or so kits you can get your LHS to pre-order now, or you can do it yourself. The actual price should be fixed in the next few days. It takes time to determine this as MA has to figure in all costs and some of those will not be determined untill P.O.s' are placed.

What if there's no MA dealer near us?

There truly is no Miniature Aircraft dealer near where I live.

Is it possible that MA would be willing to "work something out" with me as far as price goes?

Or, can a local hobby shop that ordinarily doesn't stock MA products be able to get the heli for me?
