Mainblades

Chris,
What mainblades have you guys run with round cells?
Also which speed controller have you used, and what is it looking like it will come with in the kits?
What was your all up weight with 32 NiMh's?

I will be honest I am looking for a 60 sized electric for a camera ship and if the rumor I heard about the weight (around 9lbs RTF) is true this is the ship.
Especially if MA hits the 1200 and less price range.

Just wanted to add, I see the IonX has the appropriate geometry on all of the CCPM servos... good move MA. Should be less interaction (or less/no need for mixing to dial it out) now that all the bellcrank pivots are above or below the rod, same as their respective servos.

We wanted to be able to run a lot of different motors, some turn fast some don't. This is why we had to make the gear train so versatile. Yes, with some motors you do not use the secondary stage. In fact, some motors use the same basic gearing as the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's.

We have used pretty much every blade out there, I think I have 12 or maybe 15 unique sets of blades now. As with everything else, you want to choose for efficiency. So, nice thin airfoil, swept tip blades are good. Lengths of 660, 680, 700 and 710 have been used. Jason is currently using 700's.

The weight is very dependant on motor, batteries, blades and paint. In fact Tim has a new set of frames today that he took a little more weight out of. But, counting on a heli weight of 6.5 pounds minus batteries is realistic. So, 32 round cells would weigh about 66 ounces or 4.1 pounds, so an all up weight of about 10.5 pounds, give or take.

With the new Lipo packs you can take a pound off that...

The canopy is all new.

Well Guess I just found my new cameraship.
6.5 is less than my Sceadu 50 weighs.

Sign me up! Guess I will be going electric sooner than I thought.

Nearly off topic; just curious why they changed the name from Fury Ion to IonX, and is the new name pronounced like bionics without the B, or is it Ion-X?

Maybe the Fury Gas will become GasX.

GasX...

I like it.

I would bet it is for Fury Ion "X"treme.

I like just plain ION also.

what is the motor/ controller that will come with it? I didnt see it mentioned in the thread.

what kind of chargers are being used for these 10s LiPo packs?

The kit will include the motor and speed control at first and will probably be in that 1000 to $1200 range. The batteries are currently about 700 for a complete setup, but we are working hard to get this down something like 25% very soon. Weight should come out to around the 9.5 pound range fully loaded and flight ready...again, this is highly dependant on the motor, blades, battery and even paint used.

I think I am salivating. I can't wait. When you consider the price of fuel over the long haul, it actually works out that the $700 batteries are cheaper than the equivalent amount of fuel. Someone check my math:

Let's say you can get 300 charges out of the pack before its performance degrades noticably. That's 300 10-minute flights for a total of 3000 minutes of flight.

Let's see what it takes to get 3000 minutes of flight on a .91 powered ship. A flight lasts about 9 or 10 minutes, right? Let's say 10. And how many tanks in a gallon? About 7? And fuel is about $18 a gallon?

3000 min / 10 = 300 tanks of fuel

300 tanks / 7 tanks per gallon = 43 gallons

43 gallons * $18 = $771

The problem is, it's easier to spend $700 on fuel over the course of a few months than to spend $700 right up front to fly. And, you probably don't want to recharge after every flight... I'd say two packs would be minimum requirement to get a reasonable amount of air time in a day. Oh, then there is the charger. Well, we're getting close!

If you want to do that kind of comparison, weigh in all the factors, for nitro you need glow plugs, a glow driver, a starter, starting wand, starting battery, chargers for those etc etc etc......

I'd be curious to see how the Lipos are doing now...

I typically saw serious degradation after about 100 cycles as of about 6 months ago, meaning we're still a long way from electrics actually saving you money.

I'd go through a set of $500 batteries every 3-4 months...

Last number I heard was 350 cycles. That's according to Chriss:

These batteries are good for 350 flights

Chriss, are there documented cases of this?

Cheers,

Yes, if you call Charlie at Advanced Energies (Thunder Power) he will give you this figure. I personally have 150 cycles on one set, and it's doing fine. The cycles are very tied into abuse of the battery though, so one thing to consider is if you are in the regular habit of getting the pack above ~150 F (some say 160), you are shortening it's lifespan. No big deal, just determine how long you can fly to completely discharge the battery, then set a timer in your radio for a couple minutes less than that. Timer goes beep, land. Get to know your batteries. When first starting to wring out the heli, land every few minutes and check the temps. When they get above 140, let the machine stand for a while and cool a bit. In time you will get to know your heli intimately and you'll avoid battery problems.

Guys,

one big disadvantage of electrics was not mentioned in this discussion.
It's the danger of losing one or both battery-packs in a crash.
LiPos are more fragile than mufflers or engines. I think that's quite important when talking about costs.

Mike

yeah thats the problem about people comparing an electric to a gas as "look how much gas u burn in a year" at least with a 91 i don't have the possibility of taking out a year or two's worth of gas in a crash.

Still want to see the new canopy for it...
