That IonX look nice to me. I think I might have to get one when they do come out. Hopefully it won't be too long? Maybe by Summer?

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Miniature Aircraft will sell battery packs seperately, however they are performance matched to the model.

There will also be a battery charger matched to the batteries.

So, you'll be able to get an entire matched package from MA, its just not all in the same box.

Simply put it together, install your radio equipment, charge it up, plug it in and go fly. All the engineering has been done for you.

It seems they don't have provisions for the servo supports. Are they considered superfluous now? I thought they were one of the neat things about the Fury- reduces the load on the servo bearings without all the extra linkages of a push/pull design.

Also... can't help but think... why the two-stage gearing? They redesigned the frames anyway... why not put a larger main gear in there and skip the extra gears, shaft, bearings, and all the drag associated with it... especially on electric where you are trying to reduce loss as much as possible.

That said... I can't wait to fly one.

IonX Battery Info?

How many battery cells are they made of. Li-Ion or Po?

I would like to see if my current Li-Ion/Po charger is capable of charging
the heli.

What is the voltage and capacity of the packs?
Does the $1200 or so price include everything to fly???

Thanks

Michael

The IonX is going to come with motor and speed controller. The consumer will have to furnish the batteries of there choice.

So you will still need servos, gyro, receiver, batteries. You don't need a muffler or governor.

Well, simply using a bigger main gear, would mean that there would have to be room for it.

So the frames would have to get longer, which means that component spacing changes. This makes the moments and CG's change as well. This changes the flying characteristics of the model. Plus there's still a weight impact because of additional material.

You'll be impressed with how this works, just as it is.

Carey,

Thanks for responding. When I look at the last picture on MA's site, it looks to me that if a larger main gear was used the motor would end up right about where that empty space just ahead of the layshaft is now. Accessories can be shifted around more easily than the motor; they can be moved around to keep the Cg under the shaft. In addition, the motor would end up closer to the head and reduce the polar moment of inertia of the heli, which is good for 3D.

I'm sure I will still be impressed. I know that MA wouldn't release it if it didn't rock. I just can't help but think it would be a tad bit better if the extra shafts, gears, and bearings and associated drag and maintenance weren't added.

Cheers,
Ken

The IonX is still slated to hit the market in the March time frame. It is designed to use 28 to 32 roundcells or 8 to 10S lipo.

A typical roundcell pack costs between 100 and $150.

Lipos are dropping in price rapidly. Last summer we flew the proto on batteries that cost $700 total. Within two months we will have a better battery (12 oz lighter) that is said to be in the $525 range. These batteries are good for 350 flights, if you do the math, thats cheaper than nitro.

Charging has gotten to be much safer than a year ago, not any less so than roundcells. You should still follow good safety habits and give the batteries all the respect they deserve...you would'nt smoke over a jug of fuel would you? I have several hundred cycles on several sets of these batteries that I have used for the proto work and have yet to have a problem.

The reason for the two stage gear train is that we needed to get ratios from as low as 5.8:1 to as high as 25:1...it just was'nt feasable to get that with one big gear.

We removed the servo braces to cut weight and save cost. Jason has been flying his Ion without even any grommets on the servos. Electric power is just so smooth, you dont need all that shock dampening and without the grommets you get a really rigid control system without the braces.

Thanks for your insight!

Ahhh... that explains a lot. Was this required during the testing phase? From what I have read, it seems the hacker motor provided the best performance found, and was even chosen to be included in the kits. So why would the final design include such a flexible gear setup? Will the buyer also have the choice to buy a Fury without a motor included? If so, I can see that a very wide available gear ratio would be desired. Still, if one were to desire a 5.8:1 ratio, some very large pinion gears or small spur gears would have to be made available, or the option to remove the secondary gear train.... is that right?

Thanks,
Ken

Awesome! I can't wait to get into electric helis... just waiting for the price to come down a little bit more... but the thought of losing all that destructive vibration and the over-engineering that's required to withstand it makes me very excited.
