| Nobody is pursuing these careers because the "blue collar" workers turning the stop/go sign at the construction site make more money than the non unionized engineer who had to know the math, science, geology, hydroloics, geometry, population forecasting, statistics, contracting, specifying etc etc to design the thing and they have their license at stake over a freakin typo.

Unions build this country; if it were not for unions many safety protocols would never have been implicated. Wages would not be what they are today. I'm an Engineer, an Operating Engineer. I build roads and bridges. If it were not for our skilled trades the transportation system would greatly suffer. Hydraulics is also spelled HYDRAULICS
You ask why is our labor being farmed out, because the unions are not as strong as they once was, Ragan started his union busting rampage on the air traffic controllers, and it doesn't take long for others to jump on the bandwagon.
You better think who you want sitting in the seat of that crane setting that bridge iron, a skilled union employee or someone hired off the street.
