OK, Here is a goofy question. The aluminum upgrade parts (the ones from TT)for the R30 appear to be coated with something. (or maybe some sorta anodizing) Does anyone know what is it, and can it be removed?

Wait....let me explain....

I wanted to buff out the parts (long boring winter)

if any other person has looked into this let me know.

There was a good article on home anodizing in MHT a while back - a project for hard-core DIY'ers. I do remember them saying that anodizing was a penetrating kind of action, so you could buf it out if you wanted to.

If it were *me* with that kind of time on my hands, rather than spend time buffing I would build a new kit, catalog my pocket lint, or something useful like that :-)

anodizing

soak the parts in drano for about 10 minutes no longer than 20 min.(can cause pitting if soaked to long) the anodizing will be removed.if small traces of anodizing still remain use 1000 grit wet and dry to sand the litte bit that was not completely removed.ive done this a many time with rc car chassis and various parts.the parts will have a hazy finish to them.get some mothers aluminum polishing compound or any good quality polish and buff them out with a dremel buffing wheel or a buff wheel attached to a bench grinder.it takes a little time and effort but i gurantee one thing.by doing this you can get these parts to a mirror finish.you can see your reflection perfectly when viewing .easy off oven cleaner works also, but the fumes are a headache.DO NOT try to just buff the anodizing off without soaking them first.youll wear out the buffing wheel and it will take forever to get any where.you will be amazed at how great drano will strip anodizing.

email me if you have further questions

Any alkali such as drano, easy off oven cleaner or even concentrated baking soda will take if off.
After the Drano if you dip it in a strong acid such as clorhydric acid it will take away the grayish layer and make the part shiny again. After that you can sand or polish it.
