Hi,

Would it be possible to have the site run without the requirement of cookies? I and quite a few other people run with cookies disabled all the time (hence all the guests that never logon)

For those that want to run with cookies they would remain logged on but for those of that dont we would have to enter our username and password for every reply (which I would'nt mind abit).

I can see the toll house and keebler jokes coming allready

Crunch all you want, they will make more. Please use rr's pm feature to contact me.

Not all cookies are bad

I like the way the site uses cookies. It gives such a much more enhanced feel to the sight. It allows the servers to see who is there and help them find what's new and or previlant.

This is one of the few cases that I like cookies, I'm not always thrilled with them but this time it is ok.

Both IE6 and Netscape 6 allow you to selectively allow or dis-allow cookies on a per-site basis. This way you can allow cookies on runryder.com (and other favorite sites) and dis-allow cookies for all other sites (like those pesky ad server sites).

It works well for me.

Hi,

Thanks Rotormouth, worked great. I installed ie6 when it was released and never got a chance to study the new features.

I'm probably flinging myself on a big grenade here, but I "gots ta know!"; what's a "cookie"???

Keep in mind, navigating through simple word-processing software is stretching my computer "skills" to the very limit...

Hi Steve (and everyone)

In a short answer, 'cookies' are very small files sent to and by your computer to, as volkul said, enhance a website by providing the neat abilities like a persistent log-in, seeing who's online, etc. The problem is (this is where Auger's beef comes from) is that some websites (not RR) can use cookies to collect info about your computer and other, not so pleasant things.

They were a really big deal a couple years ago (wayyy back in '98-99) but as rotormouth mentioned most browsers now give the user control on how to use cookies (IE6 gives you the ability to choose to accept/reject them or choose websites to always/never trust).

For most users it comes down to an issue of privacy (doesn't it always?) But others it just doesn't seem to bother them.

BTW does anyone know where the term 'cookie' comes from?

Mark, minor request?

"Cookies" I'm not sure, how about a stab in the hard drive. Maybe a trail of info crumbs? hehehe---------BladeRunner.
