I just bought the Orbit v 6.3

The manual is not very friendly..
Can any one can answer this:
1. what is the difference between NiCad ca. 8,0 mv/cell
to NiCad + ca. 16 mv/cell ????
I have NiCad 2400 mah 10 cells. what option should I choose ?

2. Can I discharge without charging ? how ?

3. Do I need to set up discharge current or is automatic ?

4. If I messed the setting - Is there any default setting ?

Thank you !

Another Orbit question

Ido,

1) On the Delta Peak fuction, the difference is the rate (amperage) of the charge. There are 2 charge rates - the NiCd+ will charge at a higher rate. The Orbit will examine the battery pack and will automatically set the charge rate unless you overide it.

2) Yes. Using the SET key, BEFORE you attach the battery pack, cycle thru to the Discharge function.

3) It is automatic unless you choose to change it.

4) Just turn the unit off, disconnect the battery, and turn it back on to go back to the default settings. I've found the Orbit will handle all my needs automatically, but the option is there if you want to change the parameters.

and..

Thank you very much for the swift response

With your permission, Just 2 more questions..

1. I still did not understand the the NiCd+ issue: How do determine
What set up do I need for my battery (2400 mah) ? the NiCd+
or the NiCd ??

2. If by turning the unit off I go back to the default settings - Is there
a way to memories my common battery type (NiCd) the default
is NiMh.
Thank you very much for your time !

When the unit is powered off and then on again, the last settings for delta peak and current used for each charging mode are remembered.

The Delta peak function has three settings: one for NiMH, and two for Nicads. The one for the NiMH has the lowest voltage delta of the three since NiMH are more sensitive to overcharging.

You have the choice of two different voltage deltas for nicads, one of which is higher than the other. If you use the higher of the two, you will tend to get more charge into the cells (only a bit) and your batteries will come off the charger hotter (good for some cells). The lower voltage delta tends to be easier on the cells.

Personally, I tend to use the NiMH delta for charging NiMH and Nicads. Just lazy.

Just 3 more...

Thank you Jeff,
and..

1. Reflex mode is a fast charge or slow ("overnight") charge ?

2. Is there a time limit of charging/discharging ?

3. Do I need to make all the calculations of charging/discharging -
or the orbit does it by itself ?

thank you !

Orbit V6.3 Questions.....info

There are 4 delta peak charge levels for the Orbit (not three).
2 each for both Ni-Mh and Ni-Cd. The higher 2 levels are for Ni-Cds.
Usually the larger the battery capacity the higher the delta peak setting.
See which one works best.....there will not be that much of a difference.

You must set the discharge level you want in the Discharge screen. Also you can vary the number of cells if you want to change the cutoff value for your number of cells.

For an example: If you have a 8 cell pack the charger should sense 8 and show it on the discharge screen. However if you want a lower charge cutoff voltage you can use the up and down arrows on the Orbit to change the voltage. The default is 1V /cell ......but if you change it to lets say 6 cells (6 volts) the new cutoff value will be (6v/8 = 0.75V/cell).

If you have selected "autodischarge on" in the startup menu then the Orbit will lower the current when the cutoff voltage is reached until it eventually drops to only a 50ma charge rate. Now you pack is fully discharged and you can get a more accurate account of the energy the battery had in it (in MAH).

Your discharge current should depend on what size batteries you want to discharge. Also the same for charging them.

While in the discharge screen you can also change from just discharge only mode to automatic charge selecting with the "set" key. At least three of the charge modes are available and remember to first set the charge currrent you want in the individual charge screen for the particular charge function. Also make sure you set how many times you want to cycle the batteries while in the FORMAT screen (X1...X9).

You should also first FORMAT the batteries if they are new and unused for a while. The FORMAT function on the Orbit takes some time to complete (basically overnight)....but can supply a slow charge /and discharge all at the same current. It also limits the cell voltage to 1.45 volts during charge (by lowering the current....CV) to protect the battery.

I probably confused you more but the only way you will learn the Orbit is to play with all its functions. It is a great charger...many times better then the Triton. Unlike the Triton is charges both Lead Acid and Lithiums perfectly.
