I'm curious as to which R/C Heli simulator people are using and prefer. I'm sure that many are using RealFlight G2 but I've heard others prefer sims such as CSM or Tru-Flite due to more realistic flight characteristics.

Which simulator do you prefer and why?
If your preference isn't listed on the poll please include your preference in a reply.

Question

My question is (since I am new and I just ordered my heli)

If I know how to fly a heli at Real Flight or FMS, I have a feeling for what is going on in the real world.

I am using FMS

the sim will be a HUGE advantage

Learning to hover for extended periods in the sim will allow you to hover or extended perios on your very first day at the field.

My first day out, a couple of people said, "you have a simulator, don't you?" This was 5 years ago before sims got really popular. I asked how they guessed, they said nobody hovered like that on the first day. I thought I had been all over the place, so I wasn't quite sure what then meant.

Then another new guy showed up, he had never used a sim, and boy did I feel sorry for him. It took him one day a week all summer long to get as much practice as I got in my first week while I was still building my heli!

I encourage every novice I meet to get one and use it. "I can't afford it" is generally not true, because you'll probably crash less and save money in the long run. I sure did!

I use the G2 but lately I've been testing the FMS using the RealFlight control box. I think the FMS is a prety good sim for anyone to start with. I will propose it at our club meeting so people can try flying helis without much expense.

G2 has really improved in physics with the upgrades, I just recently updated mine to the latest update and the difference was night and day versus the stock installation from the box. The heli feels heavier this time as if gravity was increased by 50% and my success rate on autorotations dropped significantly since the stock install.

I feel more confident now that if I master autos on the G2, it will help me in real life. Now my only wish is if there was a way to connect it to 3D glasses ;-)

G2 Question

For all of you who have the G2 now and had the RFD before that.
Have the physics improved on an auto so you don't get the mid
air boom strikes the minute your head speed slows even slightly?

Autos have improved a lot. The touchdown feels right. Before it gave you tons of reserve but now the lift drops off pretty realistically. I think aerobatic autos are a little harder than they ought to be, but other than that I have no complaints.

You can still boom strike, but you need to slow the blades a LOT to make that happen, I think it feels about right in that regard. I'm not sure you're really get a boom strike, more likely the heli would just drop like a brick, but the results are the same.

one more thing

The Knife Edge guys said that the physics fixes would be available for RFD as well as G2. I don't use RFD so I haven't had reason to check that myself, but it's worth looking into.

I'm not familiar with the Dave Brown sim so that's why it wasn't listed in the poll. I guess it would be considered as "Other".

Let us know what your thoughts are on the Dave Brown sim.

Thanks,

I guess it's hard to say, not having anything else to compare it to. The graphics are ok, and the physics are pretty decent, compared to the very short time I've flown. I was hoping someone else could compare it to G2, or another sim.

I actually use the stunt copter for the playstation. The only reason I use the sim is for orientation training and it works well. It is not very good as far as realistic flight since it is very twitchy and does not have a heading hold function or throttle hold. So, you have to fly the tail and practice autos on the real thing. But after flying this very twitchy sim, the real heli with heading hold seems easier for me to fly. I don't see why Sony can't make a sim with everything including a transmitter interface for under $100. Then it would be easier since people don't have to upgrade their home computers just to use sims like RealflightG2. I have tried G2 and like it but for the $200 plus another say $500 for a computer that will handle it. I will keep the stunt copter $10 and spend the other $690 on fuel or more helis.

Check out Jason Krause's website for a G2 heli and skin of the Fury.(jkheli.com) It is FUN! The problem I'm currently having with autos is when I get in a sideways orientation. The blade speed drops real fast and I only have a VERY little amount of time to correct it before the blades stop and death plunge begins. My favorite auto is back flip, side flip, pirouette, land near my feet. I'm just starting to learn autos in real life.
