OK - I got this idea in my head about a week ago, and it just keeps coming back to haunt me.

I must be bored to keep thinking about this, but hear me out:

1 - Pull the main rotors off and turn them over
2 -Reverse the polarity of the main motor.
3 - Reverse the tail rotor
4 -Reverse the polarity of the tail rotor.
5 -Secure the tail rotor stopper to the shaft (The TR will be wanting to escape the end of the shaft in it's new orientation and rotational direction.
6 - Reverse Gyro direction
7 - Reverse rudder channel
8- Oh yeah - Just remembered - Flybar baddles need to be reversed too

Right?

OK - There are a couple downsides:

1 - Need to find a friend that will "hand launch" it for you since it will need be be inverted at spool up
2 - Landing See #1 above? Ummmmm, doubt it!

Anyhing else that I'm obviously missing?

Man - I bet this post ends up appended to the "fly it like you stole it" thread that circulated a few weeks ago.

You know Carlos, you're right.

Life is full of people trying to put us down.

Think outside the box!

This planet needs more maverick spirits like GreggyPoo !

In fact, GreggyPoo is going to be hard pressed to beat me to it!!!

He had better tape it to proove that he did it though.

Inverted Heli Pad

you could make an inverted heli pad. take 2 dowels about 3 feet long and glue them horizontally about 3 inches apart. then you would put the prongs through the skids sideways. it would work for takeoff and landing!

See, what a wonderful idea that was with the dowels and all.

But I don't see any reason why the rotor head can't do its share of the work. A well timed and well excecuted rotorhead landing should be perfectly possible. Just keep the blades level.

Did the engineers that were asked to make an F-14 safely land on a ship say it was impossible? No they did not!! Did the NASA scientists say we can't land a golf cart on Mars? No they did not!! It's time for us to show the world, that we don't need landing gear! We don't need to fly right side up!!! We don't need collective pitch!!!! Greggypoo, this is your calling!!!!!

Just remember to tape it.

Thanks for talking me into my senses guys.

I AM DOING IT!

OK - It'll be my Saturday project, and I promise if everything works...

There will be video!

OK - Been thinking through this a bit more -

Swat-Ace - I like your idea, I'd already given that one some consideration. For V1, I may take a different approach though - For initial trials (assuming I get to that point with the setup), I will suspend the heli inverted from the ceiling with some lightweight shock cord - I want the weight of the HB to extent the cord under its own weight, but I also want it to retract out of the way when I lift off so it won't tangle in the rotors.
The purpose of this trial will be to see if this fixed-pitch machine will even have enough cyclic control to counteract the pendulum effect of the weight of the body on top of the rotor.

Assuming that all goes OK - I'm going to try something along the lines of what Swatace suggested (or I may just get one of those kid's toys that has an alligator on the end that is used for grabbing stuff) and have a friend help launch it.

From there I am with Carlo all the way - Land that stupid thing.

Man I love you guys -

Stay tuned...

To help with the rotor head landing, try using liberal doses of Crisco on the proposed landing site. This should smooth things out considerably, and save a bit of wear and tear on the blades

How about a string hooked to the skids upside down from a tree branch, solves take offs and landings, mind you it could get caught in the blades hmmm. elastic ?

First of all if you are REALLY going to do this then there is no need to reverse blades and motor polarity this action would cancel each other out. Do one or the other but not both. But Most important step make sure there is tape in the Video Camera

Actually -

If I reverse the motor only, the blades' leading edge will be trailing, if I reverse the blades only, same prob.

I Will definitely get it on video, and I'm planning to try it out with the elastic shock cord first - I'm not sure it will have enough cyclic to counteract the pendulum effect, but I'll get that trial on video too as it my be the last "flight" for this little guy
