e-Electric Conversions > How do I convert a Raptor to electric ?

With the increased flying time with lipo, I have been thinking of getting an electric driven Heli. Since I know how to handle the hardware on raptors, I would preferably convert on of them.

My questions are:

1. Is there any of the shelves convertion kits out there ?
2. If not, what parts would I have to buy ?
3. What batteri spec should I go for ?
4. What flying time would we be talking about ?
5. Will I notice the change in lifting power ?
6. Is Converting a Raptor the right way to go ?
7. Living in Norway..... What is the lowest practical temprature you may fly electric in ?

I am new to electric, and need all the help I can get

Thanks.

I live in Norway and I had done an e-raptor conversion a year ago with a HP300/25/A3 plettenberg motor and 2400 nicad cells but I didn't really get chance to really fly it for various reasons.

And if your considering temperatures. Flying in anything below -5 Celsius is not so fun. Your fingers get slow.

Your gyro also has temperature limits. I think if I rember right the GY401 was limited to -10 I think to function properly. You also need to let the gyro adapt to its new temperature for example if you were driving in a heated car and then you take the heli out you need to give it time to adapt.

You also have to keep the lipoly packs warm as they opperate better when they are warm. I dont know what temperature exactly but if you leave your lipoly pack get cold it wont put out as much power.

The nice thing about the raptor is that parts are readily available and they are inexpensive.

I have a Raptor conversion with the kit mentioned above also using the Pettenberg Motor. It's in a Century Long Ranger Fuse (there's a pic in Marc Ryder's recent Circumgyration 2004 photos).

I use the Thunder Power LiPo's. 7 cell 7800 mAh (actually one pack 3s4p and one pack 4s4p). I've never actually flown it til a full discharge, but I generally stop after about 18 mins of continuous flight. After a flight it generaly takes about 6000-6500 mAhs to peak recharge, so figure maybe about 20 mins of flight time.

When I first set it up it had INSANE head speed and power. I had to lower the pinions since I fly scale. I can't remember the pinions I'm using off the top of my head.

When I first flew it I tried 20 cell NiCd 2400 and NiMh 3000. Maybe flew about 5 mins tops. Not worth it in my opinion.
