Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > R60 ticking me off...

I've review and assembled according to instructions...
However, even after instlling a second set of blade grips there is too much lateral movement on the spindle. After spool-up, one grip shifts, all weight transfers to one blade and I get massive vibration. Are not the blade grips supposed to be kinda snug to the rotor head ? Mine are not and I can't seem to get them to.
Anyone know what I'm missing ???

R60

There shouldn't be any play. The 60 has a very tight head when everything is correct. I heard some rumors about some spindles being slightly longer/shorter than others. It's remotely possible you have a longer than spec spindle...

Can you tell me how you installed the head? Exactly what went where and in what order? Also, did you install the flap dampers correctly? The V1 dampers went on one way, the smaller shoulder to the grip, now they tell you to put the small shoulder towards the hub and a shim to make it right. There are some shims that you may be missing. The info may be on TT website, I'll check a bit later.

If you want to make that a great flying heli, order the O-Ring upgrade from Rick's RC. The set only cost $20.00 and gives you adjustable dampening and really improves cyclic performance. O-Rings seem to last longer and not soften as quickly as the stock barrel dampers.

Thanks Raymond for your response.
Mine is a R60 V2 kit. I assembled according to the manual. It's not complexed. I did make sure the thrust bearing washers were properly oriented. (Smaller washer closer to the rotor blade). At no time was the grips snug. After a minor encounter with the ground, I assembled with a new spindle, amoung other things. All the spindles were the same length. 118mm. I did notice the spindle screws did not screw in evenly. About 1-2mm difference. Yet this does not answer why I have so much lateral movement.
Let me know if I've missed something above.

Maybe try this

Have you tried to assemble the grips to the spindle out of the head block. That way you can see if the grips and bearings are seated correctly on the spindle. There should be no binding of the bearings with no in/out play of the grip assembly. Where you stated the bolts don't go in even this may have something to do with it also. Have you looked into the threaded hole in the spindle to ensure there is no debri in there?

Just trying to help......

Washers

There are two 1.8mm thick washers that go on the spindle, are these in place?

This is off TT tech site:

The Raptor 60 V2 includes the following changes with no price increase:

* Main rotor hub with precisely bored holes

* All new tail rotor drive gears (five of them)

* Autorotation hub with NSK bearing and high strength metal hub

* Harden steel sleeve for autorotation hub

* Free rotor blade grip spacer for 12 mm carbon/fiberglass blades

* Pointed set screws for the tail rotor hub

* Two 1.8 mm thick washers for the main rotor feathering spindle

* Eight 6 mm i.d. shims for fine tuning tail drive gear mesh

* New flybar control rod

* New elevator arm link

* New washout link

* Additional canopy support

My kit did not include these washers.

A buddy of mine had the same problem! He installed the head dampers the wrong way and had about 5 mm of play in both grips. Check to make sure you have the dampers in the right way.

Thanks Chris. I'll double check. It sounds just like what I got.
Raymond, I'll see about getting a washer from my LHS or hardware store. I know the wait time for such a simple thing is unreal.
Thanks for your help. I'll keep you posted.

When I got my 60 it was a V1, so I had to get the V2 stuff. I dont remember seeing where it told you to install the dampners small shoulder in. I too did not rec. shims, nor did I install the small shoulders on the dampners in. On spool up I also get some vibration but it's masked or goes away with some rotor speed. It has not affected the way it flies and you do not notice it during spool down. None the less I think I will be ordering those orings from Ricks. I heard they work well in fixing certain conditions.

spool up vibration

The vibration that your/most helicopter(s) experience on the initial spool up is the blades aligning themselves. My helicopter does it, all of my friend's helis do it too.

The Oring head upgrade from Rick's works great. It takes all play out of the grips. One thing I have found with the Orings though is at lower head speeds (1500rpm) the heli will wobble bad.

I started out with a V-1 and have upgraded to V-2 as time has gone by. I never did get any extra shims for the head. The original spindle is definitely shorter than the one's out now. After an aileron servo went bye-bye about a month ago I had to replace the spindle and had about the same amount of play you are describing. I went to Home Depot and got (I think) some 8 MM washers and put them between the grips and the head ( I do have the Rick's O' RIng thing). THis tightened it up perfect. I had to take 2 of the washers that came with the Rick's upgrade out of there as it was too tight with all 8 of their washers and the one's from Home Depot. So what I have on each side is 2 of the Rick's washers and one of the Home Depot washers. Don't have any idea right now what the thicknesses are of each. This set-up is perfect though.
