| There is a big difference between choosing to use gear for safety sake and needing to use gear to keep from crashing. We all know someone REQUIRING training gear should'nt be flying a turbine, however if someone did use training gear for the initial startup of thier newly built turbine then maybe it's not a bad idea. We have no evidence that he was using gear designed for glow heli's. I don't see anything but speculation above. Maybe it was made from hardened steel rods? maybe it was never intended to prevent a crash but simply to get a cautious pilot over the first flight. Maybe they were just unsure how touchy the machine would be? Who knows for sure, did you ask them while you were there? What did they say? If a turbine showed up at my field I'd be over in a minute to see it, not off laughing in the sidelines. I would want to know just for my own safety who was flying? who built it? what is required for the certification? I'd be full of questions. but that's just me.
