I'm guilty of that sometimes. But a near death experience yesterday gave me a good lesson. Other people are near the runway and if you fly near the runway, there risk is much higher.

Please fly away from the runway. It's the pilot responsibility to fly away from other fellow pilots.

This is just a hobby. No need to push yourself so hard that you piss other folks who just want to enjoy the flying.

I agree, I am only 13, I'm also new at flying heli's. I usually take off and land on the grass for the cushioning(so I won't break the training gear). I was practicing landing as soft as I could so I could land on the cement. After about 7 take-offs and landings, I took it over to the landing strip with cemplete controll. I was hovering about 3ft. from the ground when the wind suddenly kicked up! The heli julted very very colse to the ground, I'm talking about inches! But I knew what to do because I was trained... I gave it full throttle and it climed out. Talk about a rush!! I flew it back out to the grass and landed it. That was enough for me for one day! I'm never going near the strip again!!!

Shouldn't people stay away from the runway? That is where the aircraft are after all. I'm not trying to be funny. I fly from a runway because that is what it is for.

We fly these things like we have tunnel vision. We as pilots can not see and are often unaware of what is 10 feet to either side of us.

If you are flying low level and in close the chances of hitting some one off to your side who maybe be a little forward of you are greater and the reaction time is much less.

Nothing wrong with the runway. You just need some common sense and allways have a spotter!

Our group has started using the spotter type system (always 'sorta' had it though, now it's just an almost 'always have one' sort of thing). It's good to be able to ask someone if you're cutting your turns short and staying out in front of people. And if someone hoots and hollars from the pits I don't freak out as much. I feel alot more comfortable flying when a buddy is spotting for me.
