Robbe Cuatro - Millennium - Nova - Dyna-X > SE Fuel Problems

Between Maxx and I we have 4 SE's with a similar problem drawing fuel from the main tank to the header tank. 3 of these helis have 60YST2, one is a new 80YS. When we do much 3D at all, they pull air into the header tank. The80 is pulling the header tank down really quickly. It will get down to half a tank in the header when the main is at about half. All pull fuel with no air in the header if we don't flip flop around. I don't recall having the problem too much at all when I waqs running OS.
I think the clunk in the main tank is coming out of the fuel and the tank pressue is then forcing a big shot of air in the line to the header. We have the clunk lines set so the clunk just touches the bottom of the tank where it turns up at an angle. All of them have either Dubro or similar clunks, none have the stock Robbe clunk. They all have Prather medium "pink" tubing clunk lines.
Does anyone plumb their main tanks differently or have some ideas to improve the clunk lines??
I just got some Aerotrend clunk line and it seems really limber and ought let the clunk move around easily, I just wonder how well it holds up, if anyone has experience with it?
Any ideas are appreciated...

Fuel Problem

The problem you are describing I've had happen to me with the Millennium. The problem didn't occur until I changed to the Y.S 61. What I found was that the pressure line to the fuel tank was frothing my fuel and my header tank would run down. Fuel flow from the main tank is reduced while the header tank pulls at the normal rate which creates a differential flow. My solution to the problem was to reduce the amount of fuel frothing caused by the high pressure tap. On the Millennium fuel tank construction you are asked to put two taps on the rear of the tank but only one is normally used. I have found that if you use both taps by connecting them with a tee fitting it reduces the jetting pressure into the tank and thus cutting down on the frothing. So my suggestion is to add another pressure tap.

The felt Robbe clunk might help this issue.

Hi Ron,
If you are using the fancy square header tanks You need to look at the size hole coming from the main tank in your header tank...I looked at mine, and it was half the dia of my fuel line hole..It was acting like a orfice...You have to really oversize the bit to make it the right size if you drill it out..Lots of fuel flow with the YS
I ran my main pickup line thru the cap to the center of the tank with a extra weight at the end on the Futura SE ..
Really enjoyed seeing you and Maxx this weekend..
Regards,
Bill

Bill, I talked to Scott, Saturday, he mentioned the same thing you said about the header tank. I will pull one of them down tonight and check it out. That would sure explain why the 80 is doing it so bad.
I really enjoyed the conversation we had Saturday, you got me about half fired up to go get another gasser, sure wish I knew you back when I had 2 of 'em.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback!

I'll second Bill's opinion. The Hayes 2 oz headers usually come with some flashing left on the inlet nipple which needs to be drilled out. If this doesn't solve your problem then I would start looking at causes of fuel foaming or air intrusion into the header tank.

Ron,

I've got one of those huge Robbe felt clunks, I think; still in the package.

You're welcome to it if you think it will help. I'll either drop it in the mail or send it over with Tobe at MayDay, and you & Chris can fight for it.... Gotta call him this morning in regards to some fuel.

It was really great meeting you guys (and Lady Hawk). Thanks for coming and adding to the fun.

Steve

Steve, Thanks for the offer, I have 2 Robbe clunks that I didn't use, just based on what a some guys said about them coming out of the fuel because they are so big. I took a Dubro and turned it down like a MinAC clunk last night, I'm going to see how it does with the Aerotrend clunk line. I'm also going to drill out the inlet on the header tank like Bill and Scott said.

Steve, you guys sure had a great fun fly, it was just the right size for me and the Jambalaya was fantastic! I can't think of a better time I have had at one of these.

Toby said you might come up for some fuel, bring your helis and fly with us if you can. BTW I don't know if Chris mentioned it, but the Holiday in Dixie fly in is at Sharks this weekend, there is generally a lot of planes here for that, if the WX cooperates.

Take Care!

The aeroplane guys may still have a thing or two to teach us.

Bubbles are bad news for turbines so they've do a lot of work on this.
