Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > tt36 wont go full throttle

Hi,
I recently purchased a Raptor 30, my first helicopter, and have run about 5 tanks through it. On my 3rd tank I crashed it and had to replace:
Main blades
Tail blades
Spindle
Tail pitch slider
Flybar
Tail boom support
I also bought the tt upgrade muffler

Today while out practicing, the first tank of gas ran out. After re-fueling I took it back out and at about half-throttle the engine would start cutting out and would not increase rpm. I also noticed that smoke also stopped coming out of the exhaust at half-throttle. It was running fine the first tank of gas and I didn't change the fuel mix any before this started. I also tried making it richer to see if it would help but it didn't change. Does anybody know what the problem is?

I have heard that fuel lines when getting older can decay and actually get pinched off because of the exhaust pressure inside the tank. Is this a used bird or new. Could possibly be a culprit. Or maby a pluged fuel filter. Cloged needle valve. Burnt piston and cylinder. Etc. Do you have more details for us?

This is a brand new heli, purchased as an ARF. I ran it completely out of fuel the tank before, I have checked the fuel filter it is not clogged, I haven't checked anything else on the engine.

Open your main needle a few clicks. It sounds like you are going lean.

I'd have to agree with Mich PI on this one..My Raptor runs fine the first tank and then leans out a little after that run so I just bumped the main needle up a few clicks as well. Now if I could only get rid of the flat spot that creeps up every so often I'd be a truely happy camper.

Just some quick thoughts - it sounds like a fuel problem

1) Check your fuel filter. If you don't have one, you should get one.

2) You could have crap in the carb. Remove the needle valve completely and flush clean fuel through the carb.

3) Check to make sure the fuel tank seal is tight. I have heard they can leak and need to be resealed. Not sure with what, though. Maybe someone else knows.

4) Check fuel line in tank to make sure clunk it still attached and that there are no leaks. That stock line should be replaced, though, because they deteriorate in a hurry. I doubt that is your problem on such a new heli though.

Let us know what you find.

Just checking out the obvious. But I noticed on your crash parts list that you installed a new style muffler. Does the muffler have a pressure tap, and do you have fuel line going from pressure side of the muffler to the fuel tank, pushing fuel up to your carb?

The aftermarket muffler I bought is the Thunder Tiger upgrade so yes it does have a pressure tap and I have fuel line running from the muffler to the fuel tank. After the first time it did this I thought it was just running lean too, so i richened it a little and it still wasn't working right.

I checked the fuel filter and it wasn't clogged

The carburetor wasn't clogged that I could see, but I cleaned it anyway.

Everything on the fuel tank seemed fine, clunk still attached, fuel line
was fine, and the seal was tight.

Piston and Cylinder were fine.

Maybe this was just a one time problem and it has gone away. I should be able to get it started some time this week and will let you know how it goes.

Thanks for your help.

Since I'm always the contrarian, my thoughts
are that you need to check (ie. put a NEW one
in) the glow plug
and/or now that you have 5 or so tanks through
a NEW engine, the engine is loosening up a
bit and may in fact be too rich (when combined
w/ a questionable glow plug would result in
what you are seeing).

No, you are going rich. Smoke == rich. Engine cutting out = rich. Turn needle to the right a few clicks.

ttraptor,
Sounds like you're in the learning process. Experience will bring you knowledge. Use the advice from this excellent board and from some of the sites below.

However, you stated "I also noticed that smoke also stopped coming out of the exhaust at half-throttle." That is a clear sign of a lean engine. You should see smoke at all times. You also stated.
"at about half-throttle the engine would start cutting out and would not increase rpm" A lean engine will get very hot. As the heat increases you loose power (RPM's). Use the following links to tune your engine. You'll probable have a lot of good times with your TT36. I am.

I may be mistaken but a friend of mine has had problems with his clutch liner burning out on his Raptor. From what you are saying, it sounds very familiar to what has happened to him. May be worth it to just check it out.

Good luck and I hope you figure out what is wrong,

Last week I had exactly the same problem. Heli would spool up and lift off but at about half throttle it would bog down and I would have to land.
I too had very little smoke, which is the clue.!!!
I bolted my Heli to my test stand and noticed that the vibration of the heli was causing the high speed needle to rotate clockwise, so leaning out the high speed mixture. The ratchet mechanism that should stop that happening was a touch weak, all I did was put a small plastic cable tie round it and tighten it up to stop the vibration turning the needle. This cured the problem on a temporary basis, I assume a new ratchet mech. should make a permanent cure.
Hope this helps

Well, today I had time to start my heli up and try it again after checking everything. It started right away and ran just fine, so hopefully the problem has gone away.

Thanks for all your help.
