...can't really go out and fly, because it's below -20´C out. So I'm doing some nosing around here instead

This is what I've got for FAI. IMO not the most common setup what comes to the blades and the engine:

-SST Eagle Freya std. with some upgrades like 3d bearing block, extra flybar weights, push and pull collective etc.
-Webra 91 AAR
-MP2 and Funtech HN-90 type F muffler (under testing)
-Futaba 9252 digitals
-GY 401 + 9253 combo
-Sanyo 2400 NiCd battery pack
-Coolpower 10%
-MAH symmetrical blades

I'm more interested of how you actually have set up your helicopter than your equipment, but it's always nice to know what stuff other guys/gals are using

My current FAI setup is so close to a 3D setup that if I want to fly 3D, then it's just 3 minutes work to make my Freya ready for 3D....just pull in extra flybar weights, change another model in radio and that's about it I also use the same symmetrical blades for FAI and 3D.

What you think of the following? This is how we use to tweak with the head dampeners here: Many of us have used e.g 60 and 80 durometer dampeners together to make a Freya suit well in gusty wind (like last season at Gothenburg contest there was a pretty wicked wind). It really helped with hovering and was still pretty decent in fff. Just the 60 durometer dampener on another side of the head block and 80 on the other side.

What comes to radio setup I use 5 flight modes. I've got two hovering modes with different head speed, one flight mode for rolls and rolling stall turns, one for the other stuff and one for autorotation of course.

My setup is very simple with my Freya and Freya WC
actually, i don't care much about the actual pitch but i tend to have the following data:
-4/4/10 pitch degree for hovering, 1500 rpm, 0/50/90% of throttle
-6/0/9 idle 1, around 1900 rpm, 80/65/100% of throttle
-5/0/7 idle 2, over 2000 rpm. 90/80/100% of throttle
I keep the hovering pitch curve linear around the centre but I flaten the throttle curve about hovering point.
idle 1 for all upstair aerobatic expect double/ reverse rolls.

i do not use exp for hovering but reduce a little bit of ATV from 100%
sometimes i may apply very little exp for elevator only for idle 1 and 2.

I fly YS91 and Hirobo 680 blade, semi sym with 4 degree washout and Funtech muffler

FAI setup really depends, everyone have their own perference

Most FAI guys like to have a very stable helicopter in hover and that's usually done by e.g adding extra weight on stabilation bar/paddles. And because of this you need to use very high head speed in fff to make your helicopter roll at a decent rate. For multiple rolls etc. you may want your helicopter to maintain good speed and good rolling capability though the manouvers. That's why it's simple to use a specific flight mode just for those manouvers etc..

Everyone complains about pitch changes at mid stick when switching modes.

How do you make the transition between flight modes without having a visible change of altitude?

if i can remember, i may set a little delay in the transittor for mode changing. but i always forget about it

or just simply move up or down the stick at that moment.
take some time you will get used to it and make it so cool

so far what you have sounds good you are going to change the gear ratio to 8.18 this ratio will load the engine a bit more and make it super smooth in a hove and give good ff flight and some weight to the flybar paddles also make sure you cg is slightly forward when you have a half tank of fuel make sure there is no slop in any of the arms or links
a set of blades 195 to 210 grams will work fine on that model i have used tgs and ms with good results use the stock tail blades for fai they will be fine .center stick in hover mode make sure you only have +/-
1 degree of pitch change this will make the model not jumpy while in a hover aslo set you duel rates about 30% less than normal this will
calm down your movements so the model wont seem jumpy when doing the manouvers. also change your arms to less mobility this will calm it down also makew your head speed about 1500 to 1600 rpm in hover and 1800-1900 in ff forward flight any other question please ask

I am currently flying a Miniature Aircraft Tempest FAI, 7.75 gear ratio, YS 91, Hatori SB15, Futaba 9Z WC2, 9252 servos, Gy 601/9251, K&S "Ginsu" TR blades, Funtech flybar paddles, High Products TZ91II 700mm blades at 192 gr, Duralite 4000mah Li-Ion batteries regulated to 5.1V. I run 2 to2 1/2 degrees cyclic in hover at 1400rpm (depending on the wind) and 6 degrees in idle up at 1880rpm. I run 4 idle ups, idle1 for 2 rolls and roll reversal, idle 2 for 2 loops, idle 3 for everything else except, idle 4 for Cobra roll, pushover, and pull over. I also have a cruise condition to slow the rotor rpm for entry into autos. All conditions except hover are from -7 to +12 degrees pitch and all idle up pitch curves are straight lines centered at 2 1/2 degrees +, while hover centered at 4 1/2 degrees so I push forward and climb before engaging idle up so I don't get the big jump when changing conditions.
Each idle up has rates custom fitted to the maneuvers, for example, in idle 1 I do rolls so the fore/aft cyclic and TR are turned down so I cannot screw up by accidently making a minor input there. Idle 4 has max fore/aft cyclic but with a lot of expo so I can pitch the model hard to set it in an upright or inverted hover but it's not touchy to hover. at the top.

I hear what you're saying though, I cut my rudder right back in ID2 for rolls and such cause I could see my insolent thumbs were putting in unwanted commands.

Those Hi-Product blades you've got are beautiful blades, that's if you can get them, and if you can afford to sell your soul to pay for them

I have Freya WC with YS 91 Funtech Muffler and 7.75 gear ratio, 690mm Vblades, 555mm flybar with K&S 50g paddles and Futaba Radio gear.

Hover I use 1500rpm with -3 to 9, 4 deg centre stick no expo
idle 1 is 1900rpm -5 to 9, 0 centre for everything but rolls
idle 2 is 1900rpm -3 to 7, 0 centre for rolls
Hold is -7 to 10, 0 centre

I use a slider to adjust top and bottom pitch in hover to allow for wind.

That's about it.

My setup is almost the same as yours . Are you using SSR6 rotor head or SSZ2? What dampers are you using?
