Had my first clutch failure at flight/tank #96. Noticed blades would start to spin right after start. Had heard the clutches usually go shortly after a 100 flights so I had a spare and was up flying again within minutes.

Raptor 30 with an OS32, Im using the small shim on the clutch.

Clutch liners?

How many clutch liners have you gone through in 96 flights?

I think I noticed another difference in the 30/50 and the 60. When I replaced my liner the other day, that fixed my problem. However, the holes to mount my engine on the side frames are ovalized facing sideways. This allows for some adjustment/play/problems, etc.

I asked my friend with a 50 and he said they are just standard non-adjustable holes.

Anybody have any suggestions on how best to align and verify correct allignment of engine/clutch to the clutchbell and liner?

I just burnt up another liner by accidentally starting my engine at nearly full throttle.

Looking for knowledge,

Im using a clutch shim, that I got from Heliproz, which raises clutch up from the flywheel. Have never replaced liner.

What I always heard is to spin the start shaft backwards. If it doesn't spin freely and has a noticable bind something is not alligned. I had to actually drill out my engine mounting holes slightly oversized to get the needed alignment on my 30. I would hold the engine slightly tilted left and spin the shaft backwards. When it was right i cranked down on the bolts. They were loctited of course. I had well over 50 flights with no problems of it moving or getting back out of alignment before I sold it. My 50 lined up perfect right out of the box.

when you replace the liner, put a second liner of business card stock between the liner and the bell, you will get a near perfect clutch to liner clearance.

As far as alignment, I have not noted any adjustability in the location of the pinion, which is where any adjustability would be, unless you open up the engine mount holes in the frame. The pinion position is fixed basis the location of the pinion and start shaft bearing. I've never had problems here, even though I am running 9 and 10 T pinions, and 86, 85 and 84 tooth main gears. Mesh tightness is not as critical on this heli as say some 60 machines. Slap it together and fly the heck out of it. Replace parts as necessary. www.raptortechnique.com has documented what wears out and when with up to some 900 flights on one of his R30's

Kram,

good to know you were back in the air quickly.

When you replace the clutch, you should replace the liner as well. If not, your brand new clutch will not last very long, because the liner gets too thin. The clutch then expands beyhond what it should do, and will eventually brake quickly. Been there, made the mistake myself.

clutch liner

Ive got a clutch liner here but actually i have never installed one. The clutch I used was stock and lasted up to flight 96. I have used the shim from the beginning. The new clutch is a heavier duty clutch.

Probably the longetivity of the clutch is due to the fact that a quarter to almost half the 96 flights were hovering practice? The heli has not done any demanding aerobatic manuevers.

Has clutch failure in flight been a problem? Ive examined the old clutch several times during its life but know its hard to see a hairline fracture. I guess I assumed clutch failure would most likely be discovered during a start up? Im gonna check the clearances in the bell and look into installing the liner.........................what's the expected lifespan of a new clutch and liner?
