hey whatsup. I am buying a corona helicopter with an atomic force motor and cc pegasus 35p controller. I am unsure what battery pack to get though. Should I get a 7 or 8 cell (would that even work with the af)? I know i want to get sanyo cells though. Thanks guys

I tried the Atomic Force with a 7-cell pack early on. It was a disappointing experience. The stock EF7 motor is a 13 turn motor and the AF is 17 turn motor. The AF motor just doesn't have the same power on 7 cells. I think you'll be much happier with an 8-cell pack with that motor. You may even want to look at some of the sibling motors to the Atomic Force like the "Krypton Krystal" (14T) and the "EndoPlasma" (16T) motors. Same basic features but a little more power with 7 cells. The best brushed motor I found (among the many I tried) was a "Cam" 15T mod motor that was on clearance from Sheldon's. Lots of power and loooong flight times.

I prefer the GP3300 cells. They're excellent performers and pretty inexpensive. Check the deals at www.battlepack.com for different options. My best packs are matched cell packs. They have very flat discharge curves and typically will yield longer flight times than an unmatched pack. Good luck!

Lance,

Did you get the 12ga leads? I want to get one of the +1 packs with the GP3300 cells for my Corona, but was curious as to what gauge leads to get.

Yes, my packs have 12 ga. wires and Dean's Ultra connectors. My matched cell packs have on occasion gotten over 15 minutes flying time. The best time ever was 15:46 from skids up to skids down. Caution need to be excercised however. The discharge curve is so flat that when the pack is out of gas, my Corona will go from decent power to unflyable in a matter of a few seconds and without much warning.

Thanks Lance. I know what it's like to have a pack fall off quickly. I had a brand new Nimh pack in my 30 V2 that dropped off quickly while in flight. My controls locked into a left cyclic position all the way to the ground. It was a brand new pack and I made the mistake of flying it on the first charge without excercising the pack through a couple charge/discharge cycles. While the voltage looked great, the Mah's that the pack took in must have been very low. Even my Gem 2000 couldn't give me an early warning on that one. I'm going to start watching the Mah's on each charge from here on out.

Nitrocrushr,

Sounds like you need an ESC with a soft cutoff, as that will reduce the throttle before the LVC activates. Both my helis have one and the craft is well on the ground before LVC comes on.

Skyhawknut, I think you missed the point. WIth a battery pack made up of well matched cells, the voltage falls off so quickly at the end of the charge that the cutoff is almost inconsequential. I think in NitroCrushr's case(10-12 cell packs?), there wouldn't be enough voltage to fly long before the voltage ever got anywhere near the 5-6 volt cutoff.

Sorry guys, I should have clarified more about my other heli. The (Raptor) 30 V2 is nitro powered. The Nimh pack was a 4.8V 2150 Mah receiver pack. Generally my Gem 2000 would have given me an advanced warning that my pack was getting low, but because the cells fell off so quickly, it was not able to give me much of an advanced warning. About two minutes prior to the failure, I had landed to check everything out. The Gem 2000 was still flashing and giving no indication that the pack was getting low. Two minutes later it was dead

There are typically 2 configurations for 8 cells; 2 rows end to end or 1 row side by side. Either will work fine in the stock Corona but if you ever change the battery mounting method (VE landing gear), the former will be more universal. Good luck!

Hey, I just bought an 8 cell gp3300 battery and im planning to buy a superbrain charger. Does anyone know about the battery connectors included with the corona kit and if they are any good or not? thanks.

The stock Corona battery connectors were junk. Get the Dean's Ultra connectors.

I took your advice and got two packs of the ultra deans connectors. I need a female for the battery, a male for the charger and a male for the speed control. Right? They will work on my charger? And also, do I need a pair to connect the motor to the controller? Don't laugh laugh at me if im wrong, Im a newbie.
Thanks,
Dom

Dom, you have the correct set up. Always put the female on the battery, so that it will not get accidentally shorted out. Also make sure to use the heat shrink tubing to insulate the solder connections. The ESC and the charger use the same connector, so that is why you needed two sets. Now you have a spare for your next battery pack.
