Anyone experience poor gyro performamce in cold weather. I have a couple of 50 size camera ships Ive been flying the last 2 winters. One had an old Futaba 154 mech gyro. Performed flawless in all weather. Since updating to piezo gyros, I have experienced a noticible difference in drift characteristics in cold weather flying. I am familiar with the 360, 540, 410 & 460 setups

Older CSM gyro such as the 360 seems to have worked out the best so far in cold weather. I am tempted to refit one machine back to the 154 for winter flying.

Just curious which gyro servo combinations any of you cold weather helicam flyers use.

I was out today in 30 deg f with a 401 with no problems.

Most of the problems we have seen is when pulling the model out of a warm vehicle, then immediately flying it in cold weather.

Better to let the model sit for a few minutes to stabilize temps, then fly normally.

What Chris said...

I read in my 401 manual that you shoud allow ten minutes for you gyro to acclimate before flying... for me that equates to a trip to the field in the trunk.

I haven't had any trouble

I would AVOID older piezo crystal gyro's.

mechanical or newer SMM would work
better.

The reason being that the drift introduced
by the piezo is compenstated for by
a std. software lookup table so it's
inherently not accurate.

W/ the SMM, the sensor is part of the
electronics so the temp drift lookup is
much more accurate since it's directly
fed back.
