Is the beat controller ok to use with li-pos. I've heard all this spike stuff and sending current back to the battery to charge it and I was wondering if the li-pos would not be happy with that.

The only case I've heard when battery is charged from controller is in RC Cars during breaking procedure and this is valid as far as I know only for brushed motors. I can't imagine how this can work for helis because many people use freewheel anyhow and brusless motors.
Any controller will work with lipols as long as you do not exceed maximum current (for controller and batteries) and do not discharge them below minimum. That is why some controllers have option to set battery type NICD, NIMH, LION/LIPOL so then the controller knows what is a proper minimum voltage to limit/cut off motor to prevent deep discharge.
For example BEAT 30-8-30 has not option to set battery type. I can recommend for example JETI HACKER where you can set it.
