e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Manual for New 6.3 Orbit MicroLader Firmware?

Hello,
Does anyone have an updated instruction manual for the new 6.3 software of the Orbit MicroLader? What I would like to know is how to properly discharge my 5S4P pack using the discharge function. One of the new features listed for this software revision is a proper discharge capability for LiPos. But, I don't see that specific option in the menu system.

I'm hestitant to connect my LiPo pack using the only discharge mode shown without someone saying what it will do after I connect the pack. My assumption is that it will ask me to set the discharge voltage limit when I connect the pack. Can anyone comfirm this?

Thank you,
John

Discharging Li-Po with a Orbit V6.3

John,

I too would like to see a PDF manual for Version 6.3. If you notice the V6.3 version now has a 1.0v /cell cutoff for the discharge function. This was selected for Li-Po cells. I wish Orbit had a separate menu for Li cells...with its own discharge program.

Since you have a 5-cell pack and the manufacturers like to see a discharge voltage around 3 v/cell....you would want a 15.0vdc cutoff voltage from the Orbit (actually some say 2.5 volts /cell so you can go a bit lower without worrying).

On the Orbit in the discharge menu select 13 to 15 cells depending on what the manuafacturer suggests (2.5v x 5 low to 3.0v x 5 high).

The Orbit will now allow about 35 Watts discharge max (25 Watts with V6.21). So whatever you select as the discharge current will not harm the batteries. You can also hold in the "set/on" key to set the max discharge mah for your batteries if you want.

One nice feature of the Orbit is that when you first power it up and hold down the up and down keys you can set "autodischarge on" (I believe this is what it is called). So when the charger is discharging the battery and gets to the cutoff voltage at your set discharge current....the Orbit starts tapering down the current until the battery eventually can only supply about 50 mA before shutting off. This is a much better way of accurately measuring the batteries capacity. All cyclers including the Triton should have this feature and they would be much better for testing the packs capacity.

Good luck.

Thanks Michael. That is exactly what I figured. I too had noticed the change to 1.0 V per cell.

I really would be nice for Orbit to publish a PDF manual.

Where did I buy the Orbit?

Gary,

I bought my Orbit Microlader V6.3 from RadicalRC.com. I just upgraded it from V6.21.

It works very well and puts Great Planes Triton to shame! If anyone else tells you otherwise they don't know enough about how chargers are supposed to work.
