e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Li-Ion and the Orbit Microlader V6.3 Charger

I just upgraded my Orbit Microlader to V6.3 (came with V6.21).

Here are the results when charging a Li-Ion
2-cell 1200mAh battery:

The battery was first discharged to 5.0V which is the manufacturers minimum. The battery is also 2 yrs old.

Charge Time mAh In BattV Amps
.....15 min ....... 370 ... 8.3 ... 1.5 !
.....30 min ....... 655 ... 8.4 ... 0.8
.....45 min ....... 815 ... 8.4 ... 0.5
.....60 min ....... 925 ... 8.4 ... 0.35
.....75 min ..... 1001 ... 8.4 ... 0.25
.....90 min ..... 1055 ... 8.4 ... 0.2
.....135 .......... 1094 ... 8.4 ... 0.15
.....180 .......... 1198 ... 8.4 ... end

As you can see I started the charge current above 1C (1.5A). The battery did not get much above room temp. Unlike the Triton Charger the Orbit can charge a Lithium battery at the requested charge current. If this was my EX Triton charger it would have only gone up to 700 ma and taken forever to just put in about 850 mah!

Its nice to have a charger that actually works correctly and also a PC interface to see what the charger is doing at any time.

If anyone has the "MicroLog" Program and would like to see some graphs email me. The Orbit works great with all batteries including Lead Acid and Li-Ion/Po. I wish I could say that about the Triton.

By the way this charger can actually charge up to 11 Li-Ion cells at a maximum of 6 Amps. There is NO fan in this charger, so no matter what it is doing it is quiet.

Your jumping on the end of the band wagon. Many of us have owned the Orbit 's for several years. I own the Pro version and also just upgraded to 6.3. One heck of a charger in my opinion, It charged my 12 cell 2400's in 20 minutes at 8 amps. And now with 6.3 the Pro can charge 12 LiPoly's at 8 amps. Perfect for the 8000 ThrunderPacks. Glad you like it, do a search and you will see that many do.

I haven't seen any of the specs say that the Orbit will charge 12 cells at 8 amps. The best I've seen is it doing 11 cells at 8 amps and that is the Pro version of the Orbit.

Could you point me in the right direction for those specs? I'm in the market for a charger (actually two of them to do 2, 8000 mAh - 5S4P's)

I just want to make sure I'm spending $750 in the right direction.

Thanks,
Shawn

Right on the Orbit Electronic website it says 1 to 32 NiCd/NiMh or 12 LiPo cells for the MICROLADERpro. Orbit electronic

OK, technically the maximum output power for the pro version is 275 W which would dictate the ability to do 8 A at up to 34.375 V.

The standard non-pro version can now do 11 cell LiPo.

Alrighty then. Thanks. Now are people actually getting the 8 amps. I love the wording companies use for products... UP TO 8 amps

Thanks guys,

Shawn

Yes, the Orbit chargers actually will put out their max current up until they reach their max power output if that can happen with the battery being charged. That is the same for all of these high end chargers.

> I love the wording companies use for products... UP TO 8 amps

That is because they have to make a tradeoff in design and capabilities between max output power and max output voltage. If they limited the max output voltage to the point where the charger can put out its full current then we wouldn't be able to charge as many cells.

Thank you very much for the information John. It is appreciated. Looks like I'll be heading the Orbit way.

Is there a power supply you would recommend? I've seen some out there like this one http://ramboy.com/cosel.htm but I'm not sure it would work. If it did, I'd probably buy 3 of them. One for each of my chargers.

Edit,

Ooopsy, just noticed you posted to that discussion. Well, it sounds like I'm well on my way to being powered!

Thanks again,

Shawn

Shawn,
Yeah, those power supplies are great little power supplies and the price is definitely right. I can charge my 5S4P pack at 6 A (I have the standard Microlader) no problem with that supply. I bought two myself. I like them so much I might buy more although for what I don't know.
