e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Li-Ion's wont explode?

Ok its the 21st century for crying out loud. I dont really want to put some antique battery pack into a heli. I also dont want to blow up or have a $70 pack fail. Would, and do they make, a Li-Ion pack, like 7 volts or so that woudnt fail or blow up? I would be using it with a hacker brushless, on a corona or a eolo.

You probably want to consider a Lipoly pack, they are very common and the cells are coming down in price to closer to comparable with nicd and Nimh for the voltage and capacity.

as far as the whole fire thing,
Not that I am aware of... they are not idiot proof (as far as safety is concerned like nimh cells are) but the only times that people gripe (check rcgroups, the lipoly penetration there seems to be very very very good) about them blowing up, burning things down, etc. is when charging (or should I say over charging) or after the pack has been heavily damaged in a crash. So what my buddies who are going to lipoly are doing is charging them in a fire resistant case (such as a metal ammo case lined with plastic with the lid shut) and putting it where it won't do damage if the pack goes up. That and they treat a damaged pack the same way, put store it in the metal case, and carefully dissect off the damaged cells and destroy them.

(the switching batteries shouldn't be a problem, as a primary power pack, you probably will want to have at least two around anyways)

If you spend any time on the ezone you'll learn a lot about these types of batteries. The Lithium ion battery has been known to explode from over charging. The Lithium Polys have never exploded per say but will smolder and possibley catch fire if over charged. There are also concerns of damage to the batteries from a crash because of the softer packaging of the li-po's. The thing I'm running into now is balancing the model out with a lighter battery system. That's what's killing me right now cause I may have to add nose weight to balance the darn model out (Pmax).

We need this discussion alive......

I can not image putting a bomb or a fire work ,which will blow up anytime, inside my helis & burn my heli room down....

The thing is, your taking a risk while in the charging mode. I personally recomend charging the lipo's outside of the heli. That means you have to have a quick and easy way to remove the battery from the heli. Or you can trust yourself and your charger and charge it while in the heli. Not really the smartest idea but a lot of people are getting away with it.
