I have a set of Mr. Carbon Boom supports that I need to replace an end on. Any of you folks know what will soften up JB Wield

Thanks
Greg

Enough heat will do it, but "enough heat" would also destroy your part.

JB Weld was originally designed to repair small holes in car radiators; it's pretty tough stuff once cured.

Ever tried grinding out a clutch liner that was installed with JB Weld? I did- once. Never again.

Personally, I would just bite the bullet and get new parts.

Maybe soak it in some acetone?? That should loosen something up..

extreme heat to the tune of about 500F is the only thing.

Next time use 30min epoxy.

I had to grind out JB weld out of my clutch liner numerous times. I just used sand paper and a little elbow grease. Its is a pain, but I never had to worry that my clutch liner coming out. Almost cost me a crash once.

chuck it into your lathe and use the closest larger drill bit you have piece of cake

<<...piece of cake...>>

Provided, of course, one has a lathe in the first place...

Try it with a Moto-Tool and tell me how easy it is. Sure, it's doable; I just don't have that much patience and perseverence these days.

I had good luck removing JB weld from boom support ends by first softening the connection with heat (a paint stripper works good). That will allow you to pull the parts apart. Then I cleaned out the inside of the aluminum boom support socket (.25" ID) with a drill (.25"). It wasn't perfect, but it worked well enough that I could re-use the ends. If your like me and don't have expensive tools or alot of money for new parts, it's worth a shot.

ErgoNut,
Auburn, NY. huh? Well, I have a house just outside of Cayuga . I went to school at Union Springs. I'm living in NC now but I might move back late next spring!! Anyway, if I get up there we'll have to get together and do some flying!!!

We just removed some ends from the boom struts on an x-cell. Used a small very hot torch to heat the part. One of them blew up when it came off. It was quite funny....since I wasn't doing it . I wasn't paying attention and then there was a loud POP and off the part came.

Thanks

Thanks guys..LOL so much knowledge. Since I have no lathe and didn't want to blow myself up, I put it on a grinder and very carefuly ground it off. Now that was a broken boom end. If the end was good and I wanted to put a new shaft on it I would drill it out

You're saying this Goof Off will dissolve cured JB Weld without affecting whatever it's adhered to? That I gotta see...

JB Weld removal

JB Weld is a 2 part epoxy adhesive with metal filings added as a filler. I don't think there is any really good solvent that will soften it and only it. Also, I don't think high heat is the way to go either. If the epoxy you want to remove is in a spot where you can get at it then you can carefully sand or file it away. (Of course this is no help if the adhesive is in a hole or someplace you can't get at.) On real aircraft extreme cold is used to make epoxy more brittle before "breaking" it off. (As on a flap when peeling off a bonded aluminum skin from a honeycomb core for example) Dry ice is generally used to do this. At home you might try a can of "spray cold" or some freezer time. (Spray cold is even used to remove gum on airliner carpets. They spray it then hit it with a little hammer then vacuum up the pieces) So I think the best you can do is first remove any visible epoxy by mechanical means then freeze it and break it apart. With a little luck the epoxy will break but your part will not.

Easy......

Take and cut the damaged end flush with the boom support tube using a hacksaw or fiberglass cut-off wheel. Then use a Dremel and a dry wall bit looks like a drill bit.Use it on medium-low speed until you have a good size hole then speed it up so it starts to melt.Work it in and out until you remove most of it.Then get a drill bit that matches the inner diameter of the support tube to finish it up.If this is too much for you then you need a new support!

Steve,

No, I'm not suggesting that Goof-Off will remove
JB. Nothing other than heat or a lathe will do that which is why I'm careful about where I use it.
