I'm running Windows server 2003 and the Windows Veritas backup utility to back the system up to DVD. I needed to restore a file today and found out that the backup process has been failing for about a month. I checked it periodically when I first installed this system for a couple of months and it was working fine, so I trusted that it was still doing so and neglected rechecking it from time to time. I viewed reports on the failures and the cause was insufficent disk space. I viewed the properties of the disk (s) and the file shown is approx. 2gb with a disk capacity of 4.7gb. The properties box showed the disk to have the correct capacity (4.7gb), but showed 0 (zero) available disk space, even though the file it contains is only 2gb. The backup file is incremental, with the instruction to erase files to be overwritten. Does anyone have an idea why it is showing zero capacity left, or know of a better way to accomplish large backups? I don't really like tape, so I thought the DVD deal would be the way to go. Like I said, it worked like it was supposed to for a while, untill I needed it...of course. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jojo

I am not entirely sure but isnt there a limit that you can set for backup file's like swap files for eg. maybe you limit has been reached, what did the log's in event viewer say?

I've played around with a few different config's using Veritas, and I've found that the DLT tapes seem to be reliable -- I do the same with incremental backups, and a tape will last a long time, and survive a ton of overwrites... don't know much about using DVD-RW's for backup -- I know CD-RW's tend to get a little weird after a few overwrites. like stated in the previou spost, check the duration of the overwrite protection -- maybe you're past that limit.
