Aerial Photography and Video > Monthly RAPV task - rules

(Edited)

Not rules as in "the rules"

For sporting purposes.

Pics should be taken during the period of submitting which is 3 weeks.
(at end of vote)

Add a short note on any corrections made with pic posted under "Task of month" thread.

Try to keep adjustments to a minimum, the aim being not to discourage those who are not so good on the editing from posting pics, leaning more towards a "fly'n'shoot task" more than a "great picture" task.

PIC SIZE
Mark makes a note about size of pics posted
700 pixel width recommended (wide view).

If it works out maybe we can get someone to sponsor a prize and vote on the shots at the end.

That should cover rules of any kind.

Hi MPA

Just tried Irfanview, always wondered how that information is retained.

Excellent program.

Does anyone know if Photoshop does the same thing, if so, how???

Sounds like good rules.

I strongly agree with the "'go take a picture Task' for fun of a challenge, not a competition " idea. I'd like see it kept really informal to encourage ALL who want to give it a go regardless of what level of equipment they are using.

When the time comes for a vote for favorite pic I'd like to see the votes based mostly on subject matter so the playing field is somewhat level.

One thing.... we need to define "light correction" are we just talking brightness?

no contrast, hue, or color saturation correct?

"Does anyone know if Photoshop does the same thing, if so, how???"

Lee,

I use PhotoShopCS and if you "Save As" (jpg) the EXIF will be retained.
If you "Save for Web" the EXIF data will not be inserted.

Cheers,
Jeff

Hi Jeff

Thanks, I tried a test earlier on one for irfanview, if I save the EXIF info and then upload to the web, (As JPEG not web) I then go into the properties of that picture and the EXIF info isnt there, buts it is on my PC.

Any ideas?

Manipulation being more extreme effects like sharpening and cloning and air brushing etc where you tend to loose the feel of the original shot.
Id say hue, saturation, color are a simple corrections under lighting and do as needed.

Lee
When you go to save an image and the "Save As" dialogue pops up
You will see another box popup with properties, select the JPEG tab and set JPEG properties.
You can set quality.
Also checkboxes to retain EXIF info and other info in the JPEG.
Let us know if you cant find Ill put a screeen shot up.

PIC SIZE
Mark makes a note about size of pics posted
(After the vote closes and we post images)
700 pixel width recommended (wide view).

Note Irfanview has a great image reduction option set and easy to set images to a given pixel size or files size, not just % reduction.
Use retain aspect ratio option.

Rgds.

The discussion is getting "complicated". My kneejerk reaction is that manipulations are a part of the photographic process. The photographer's job is to convey his image using the tools at his disposal. Brightness, contrast, dodging, burning, cropping are all traditional and valid tools. If you don't want to allow free use of these then I suggest you say "absolutely no manipulations of any kind" as would a newspaper to whom you were submitting a digital photo. The whole EXIF thing seems to prevent the use of Photoshop (at least from my experimentation with my version) which I also believe to be overly constraining since that is the photo editor of choice for many people (especially those of us who use MAC's).

Since it would be pretty difficult to guess who did what ....

might I suggest that the only rule to the photo manipulation be that the submitter of the photo just let everyone know what adjustments they made to the photo but try to keep adjustments to a minimum (give a brief explanation with submission).

Same with the the "EXIF thing " (I don't even know what that is). I suggest that all submitters attempt to put the "time stamp?" on the photo but if they can't figure out a way then lets all take thier word for it.

No big pizes at stake here... lets just keep it simple and fun... we don't even know if many will participate yet.

Does this make sense to all? can we be in agreement?

Not trying to make the rules here.. just hoping we can reach a general conscensous here QUICKLY

MPA...

what do you think? this is kind of your baby.

You've laid down some guidelines. Do you agree that the your rules should be used as GENERAL guidlines to avoid this getting overly complicated?

Don't want to see anyone getting discouraged from participating in the RAVP task

manipulation: I think its best to have some bounds
or at least as daggit suggests a short note on any corrections made and try to keep adjustments to a minimum.

Yeah we can drop the EXIF thing, it is a complication and it simply for date stamping.
As you say its not a comp so it doesnt really matter.

Cheers
