| I have used tuned pipes on heli's.For the best results I have set the pipe up on the engine in a fixed wing machine, or test stand using
a propellor. If you intend to run your engine, when in the heli, at 17000
rpm then tune the length for maximum power at 16000 rpm. That way
you will still get a good boost at 17000, but if you load up the rotor
disc then the rpm drops further into the power band and really comes
onto the pipe holding up the head speed. If you unload the rotor disc,
the headspeed and engine speed will increase, the engine will lose
power as it leaves the power band thus limiting the headspeed.Setting
the pipe up in this manner, it acts as a govenor while still boosting
power. You can of course tune the length of the pipe while in the heli,
but using the above method, you know where you are before flying
your heli.
