Hello everyone,
A few guys and I decided it may be cool to start a thread where people can show off their computer hardware and software setups here on RunRyder. I placed it in the "Remote Video and Photography" section because a lot of the machines may be used for video / still editing.

Feel free to post your pictures, descriptions, etc in here without fear of persecution for your nerdy-ness We're all nerds in here.

I'll start out with my current setup along with a few pictures.

These are some images of my editing setup I use for my videos.
1.) The leftmost (wireless and/or hard wired) Laptop in these images is a Powerbook G3 400 MHz. It has a 20 gig internal drive (and I store DV on external drives) and 320 megs of RAM. I use this machine w/ a FireWire card to rip the video off the Canon GL1 I use on the helicopter and edit the clips into the videos I made using Apple iMovie or Final Cut. I have Premier, After Effects, etc... but do not need them for the simple, basic editing that I do at this time. The Mac has Apple OSX Panther 10.3 and OS 9.2 on it.

2.) The right side laptop is my (wireless and/or hard wired) PC. It is a Pentium III 700 with only 128 RAM because of some problem where the upgrade RAM chip does not work. Makes me upset. It has a 20 gig hard drive and Windows XP on it. I use it for the audio editing (SoundForge) for my promos. I also do all my Windows encoding with it. After exporting from the Mac in QuickTime or MPEG format I convert the video to WMV with this laptop. It is for the most part my primary machine because of its portability, and I SSH into all my Linux Machines from it. This laptop runs WindowsXP w/ Service pack1, Office XP 2003, etc, Photoshop 7, Illustrator 10, etc. I made the R/C HeliCam logos w/ Illustrator on this computer as well.

3.) Linux Desktop (Box out of view, monitor is the one in center of these pics) This is the machine I use for most of my day-to-day tasks, but I access it wirelessly from the WinXP laptop. This is only a PIII 500 MHZ machine with 384 megs of Ram, but it has Linux Mandrake 9.0 (Soon to be Debian) on it and runs very clean, efficiently, and reliably. I use this machine for my programming, compiling, editing in VI, and other day-to-day tasks. It also runs MythTV which is a Linux-based TiVO type program. So I of course have a TV/FM stereo card, DVD decoder card, etc. The machine is slow and will be upgraded for X-mas, but it has supplied very reliable operation since I got it senior year of High School. This is also the machine I put the blue light in as seen in image below.

The other stuff on the desk is:
900 MHz Wireless Headphones
HP 6122 full-duplex printer
18 port 10/100 Network hub
External SCSI 4X CD burner for the Mac
4 port USB Hub
3-speaker audio system
17" Sony Trinitron Monitor
15" Sony Trinitron Monitor
D-Link web-cam
PDA
Thrustmaster Joystick
HammerHead FX Joystick
Logitec iFeel USB mouse
Wireless Keyboard/Mouse
----------------------------------------

Now, every computer needs blue lights. Here is my desktop computer that is in the editing photos on the bottom left of the desk. This is the 500 MHz Linux box mentioned above:

There is a lot of stuff on that desk, here is what it takes just to power it, and these pics are old. There are now FOUR (4) power strips FULL to power that desk since there are two PC's on the bottom and two wireless laptops on the top.

But my desktop isn't the center of the apartment.. no no.. gotta have a network closet! This closet takes the internet pipeline from the router in the living room and spreads it to the bedrooms.

It also houses the a few servers:
Pictures of the Network Closet:

1.) The Top machine in the pics -- MacLinuxLand -- This server is our Webserver, CVS server, Other stuff server. It is a 33 mhz PRE powerPC desktop mac with 66 megs of RAM and a 4 gig hard drive. This machine is a HARDCORE linux server. It runs Debian Stable and is really rock solid. It houses our Apartment web site -- www.d229.com as well as supplies a gateway to other machines, etc. This 33 Mhz machine is unstopable.. except when we lost power and I mess it all up for stupid reasons.

2.) The bottom left machine -- Backupserver. This is a Pentium 133 running Windows 98 (Has to be for DOS networking reasons) with 70 something megs of RAM. This machine is only on during the backup processes. It has a 2 gig operating system Drive, and a 120 gig (soon to become 250 gig) drive to store backups of My desktop(s), Laptop(s), Mariah, and other random things that need to be backed up. I wrote a custom boot disk that loads network drivers and Samba/NetBEUI/NetBIOS for DOS (M$ DOS networking) drivers, connects to the backupserver, loads Drive Image, and starts a Backup w/ maximum compression.

3.) The bottom right machine (metal case) -- Mariah. The Mariah server is the file server for the apartment (with web access) that also plays MP3's and flashes lights to the music in the living room w/ visualizations on the TV screen during parties. It has Windows XP (only because the Winamp Litez plugin ONLY works with XP), a 1 GHz Celeron with 256 megs of RAM. This machine has a 60 (soon to be 120) gig hard drive and a 20 (soon to be 60) gig secondary drive along with a 5 gig operating system drive. All my digital images, files, programs, MP3's, etc are ALL stored on Mariah.

Also in the closet are a Netgear 8 port Switch, monitor, wireless keyboard for Mariah, two power strips (full), cable TV splitters and signal amplifier, shared Epson Stylus 740 printer, netowrk wires, and I cut openings in the door and put vents in the top and bototm with two brushless fans to keep the closet cool.
---------------------------------------------------

The living room with TV that displays what is on the computer screen (From Mariah in the server closet) and has the Lights that flash with the music coming from the surround sound unit (also hooked up to Mariah in the closet).
(old pic)

Finally, the OLD router setup we used to have. We've since upgraded to better stuff:

Ok, I'm done showing my nerdyness for now...
Sorry its so long, but us nerds have to show SOMEONE who cares.. hence this thread.. ok, its YOUR turn!

OK, Here's my studio. I have to say that I'm very proud of "her" because I built every single piece of it. The room, furniture, editing systems, even the paintings on the walls. From concept to completion it was designed and built by an editor. There are many hidden conveinances that the photos don't show.
Some Room Basics:
265 sq.ft "L" shaped room
Houses 3 edit bays
each bay has 2 systems connected to 1 KVM
all 6 machines are HW networked
5 are dedicated NLE and the 6th also serves as my DAW able to record 8 in live.

All systems include: 3.2ghz P4 800mhz FSB, 2gigs Ram, 80gig SATA system drive, 160gig SATA "audio storage" 2 mobile rack trays for removable Video HD's. I use the 3 fan VIPower models and have over 10 teras of removable storage. Pioneer A09 burners and a 7 burner dupe rack with wytron controller. OS is XP pro.

NLE Software/Hardware of choice is Edius Pro w/NT cards or DVRex RT cards, Audio BO is a Delta 1010 to a Presonus preamp.

Enjoy the pics.
Regards,
Anthony
