Wait...

Id consider waiting until after xmas, and possibly for the next intel chip release, then go for what was entry level last year (this year)

I run a 2.4ghz intel, but the difference for me has been the ram, more is good, especially for loading up CS and the like. A gig or more of ram and spend good bucks on a video card... like the radeon pro 9600 or greater. Youd be better consulting someone that can build something to meet your exact needs rather than some name brand, off the shelf piece of sh!t. They reckon with the name goes a good garantee... what ive found is, with the name.. goes a limited upgrade path, the inability to add anythng to it without going back to the manufacturer and many other horrible things.

It's been said and I'll say it again. AMD best bang for buck. Besides the new Athlon64 is kicking Intels butt. It's also backward compatible with 32bit software so you don't have to replace windows or Office or anything with new versions.

Build the thing yourself... You'll get more bang for your buck... and who needs a warranty?? If you want me to take a dump in a box and put a warranty on the label... I can.... I have lots of time.. "(Tommy Boy)" Your "new" computer will be an antique inside of 2 years anyhow... I build a new one for myself every 2 years and I stay fairly up to date and save tons of dough... Try http://www.newegg.com or http://www.pricewatch.com both great sources for the best prices on hardware

Why buy brand name boxes?

Find someone who knows what they are doing and get it built to your own specs. Save you a lot of cash and you get a much higher spec machine for your money. You should still get warranty on any parts as long as it's not your fault if things fail.

Why pay for a name

Name brands machines tend to cost a fortune when it comes to upgrading. Most of the time you have to purchase proprietry components as off the shelf parts don't fit.

Be buggered if I'm going to give a name brand company $$$ just to have their badge on the front. My home build will out perform near on any name brand $$ for $$

I tell ya what. Go and buy a HP/Compaq, Dell or IBM to suit your specs and we'll see who comes out best off.

Just don't buy crap components.

There was a time when the big names were home grown in the US these days they are full of components made in China.
Just open an IBM these days and look inside.
I used to be a IT technician for a retailer of IBM in Australia. I was shocked at the quality of the components that were inside these boxes for the money spent.
I now work in a large company with HP across the board. These too are full of cheap components and fail on a regular basis.

Buy a well made and equiped home build

Building is WAY cheaper and usually better. I wouldn't pay twice as much just to have a name on it, if you built it you can surely fix it. Building isn't so bad anymore, you don't have to worry about frying the processor b/c of jumpers on the motherboard like you used to. If it fits without too much force, then it probably goes there.

you need:

motherboard
processor
heatsink
ram*
hard drive*
case*
power supply(sometimes with case)*
cd-rom*
burner*
floppy*
network card* (sometimes on motherboard)
graphics card
soundcard* (usually on motherboard)
modem*
mouse*
keyboard*
monitor*
operating system*

the stuff with *'s are what you usually keep when upgrading, depending on what ram you have you either add to it or get faster ram.

http://www.newegg.com and http://www.tigerdirect.com are the best places I've found for parts.

The best thing about building your own is in a year or two when you sell it you don't lose much, if anything. Never get the "Best" because its not the best for long and usually cost about 5x more and the performance isn't noticeably different than the ones that were "the best" a couple months ago.

example: (I would get AMD but Intel works as an example)
"top of the line" "Intel Pentium 4/ 3.2 GHz Extreme Edition 800MHz FSB, 2MB L3 Cache, Hyper Threading Technology"
is $1000+
while the next best is "Intel Pentium 4/ 3.2C GHz 800MHz FSB, 512K Cache, Hyper Threading Technology"
is $400
next best is "Intel Pentium 4/ 3.06 GHz 533MHz FSB, 512K Cache, Hyper Threading Technology"
is $265
you won't notice $700 worth of difference in them.

If you really don't want to build it then I would get one built to your specs before buying a "name brand" one....as others have said.

I use Mutliwave http://www.mwave.com Go to barebones system link..

They aren't much at all for shooting the breeze or even asking how the weather is where they are -- too busy to bs. But as for great service and prices, I only use them for my computer builds.

My latest system uses a Abit IC7-G motherboard and a P4 2.4 Ghz CG (800Mhz) and it was overclocked to 3.2 GHz stable. I keep it at 3.0 GHz since I'm using the stock cooling fan. Not too shabby for a 2.4 chip. I'm running two Corsair 512MB PC2700 memory chips using the IC7-G's Dual DDR feature. My favorite case is the AOPEN H600A if you're looking for a quality case without neon lights and windows.

Forget about using the on-board sound chip.. even though built in 6 channel audio is referred to as a major selling point, I learned the hard way that built in audio systems are all but useless with the Direct-X sound features used in most current games. Plan to spend another $120 or so on a good 5.1 sound card like the Soundblast Audigy 2.

I made the mistake of going with a GeForce Ti4800 video card right at the beginning of ATI's 9700/9800 release... man those 9800's really blow away my GeForce.. I just didn't think ATI would deliver after the bad experiences I've had in the past. By the way, I heard Circuit City has a sale on the 128 MB 9800 card right now.. $200!!

I always stick with Intel Chipsets and now Intel CPU's. However if you're looking for a great RAID system, Via's new RAID subsystem is awesome even though I don't care for Via in general. Some of Abit's boards have Intel chipsets with a Via RAID chip.

In the end you'll have a better system than a Dell or Gateway. Look at it like this.. Dell lays out a design for a particular model. They plan to make say 100,000 of this unit. Faced with a choice of standard hard drive model they can go with:

A Seagate 120GB 7200RPM drive with a 2MB cache and 9MS access for $88.00

or

B Seagate 120GB 7200RPM drive with a 8MB cache and 8.5MS access for $96.00

Now if you were going to choose for your single computer, the obvious choice would be the faster access drive with the bigger cache for only $8.00 more. For Dell, this translates to

100,000 units X $8.00 = $800,000 cut into profit. You can see where cutting a performance corner here and there can really add up in the long run.

One other thing if your going to use it for games stick with the CTR screen. The flat panel screens wont hold up in fast action games. Plus you can pick up some nice ones on ebay. I bought a 22 inch dell for $150.00. it has a 60 Hz refresh and with my ATI9800 pro any screen size will work. Just my 2 cents
