Aerial Photography and Video > EOS 300D video out looks like it is just for preview

Hi Folks,

I recently bought the EOS 300D and it looks like the video out only works for previewing pictures already taken. Not exactly what I was looking for. Does anyone that owns this camera know if you can see what is in the viewfinder live? In the manual it says on p. 31 that the LCD cannot be used as a viewfinder to shoot. Then on p. 93 it says while looking at the tv monitor, you can view images and set the menu settings as you can with the LCD monitor.

Is this the way it works on all digital SLRs?

Best Regards,
-Dave

Hmmm..

Dave,
I don't have that camera, but I can point you in the direction of a great forum for digital cameras.
http://www.dpreview.com
I have been doing research on there for my next purchase. LOTS of good info.
I also interpet what you have there to mean that you can work the menu funtions while looking at the TV screen just as if you were looking at the LCD.
So it basically is a big monitor. Doesn't read to me like you can use the LCD as a Viewfinder at all.
Jeff Scholl has one on here maybe he can help if that website cannot.

The 300D is a digital SLR camera which is different than what most people are used to. With the SLR's you do not get a live output, which in our case is a REAL bummer.

fitenfyr:

I went over to the forum you suggested (thanks) and did a search, someone asked the same question, the consensus was that you only get to view the preview. I also did a general search on Yahoo for Digital SLRs and a feature list mentioned a video out connector for viewing pictures only.

smithprod:

Looks like that is the case.

Thanks for the replies!

I guess I should have really thought how an SLR works, as soon as you think about that you realize why it couldn't have a live preview. It also makes sense why the cameras (non SLRs) that use the LCD for the viewfinder would have a live video out.

It looks like the best I can do is set the preview to hold and then snap a picture when I am near where I think I want to be, then move and repeat the process.

I thought if I went out and got the camera that Jeff Scholl had I would take pictures just like him.
So Jeff, how do you take pictures with the 300D?

I thought about doing that with my 10d, but have a small vid camera from supercircuits that I will aim in tandem with the slr, granted you don't get the same fov as the camera, but I think with practice It wouldn't be a problem.

I've been to that website for the reviews but I had never looked at the forums. I found it helpful, but I figured more people would be interested in "video out" here than a camera specific forum. The other site I go to for reviews is:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/

They also have user forums.

I was considering a similar thing, but my camera person thinks it is workable the way it is. Of course, she hasn't tried it yet, we'll see.

Raise the mirror?

On my ancient Nikon F2s you could raise the reflex mirror to reduce vibration in a shot. I expect that the canon flips up the reflex mirror to expose the picture array. Is there such an option which would allow the preview to "go live"?

mlmcquiggjr:

The 300D does not have mirror lockup. The 10D does have mirror lockup. The way I understand mirror lockup works is that the mirror is raised out of the way and then some delay later the shutter curtain is opened to expose "the film". I don't think this would be any better then previewing the image right after it is taken. What do you think?

Rats!

Looks like the kludge solution will be something on the order of an additional pin hole video camera connected to the downlink, with both cameras "viewing" the same target. Maybe even set up to peer through the eyepiece of your 300D?

Canon 300D

None of the digital SLR's work on a live video preview because the sensor is behind the mirror and shutter so the sensor is exposed in the sameway normal film is for only a short time.

However the Olympus E10 and E20 SLR's use a prism insead of a mirror and do have a live preview, but the video is not of great quality, but ok to frame a shot.

Hope this helps.

Hmm, that's a propper nuisance but thanks for pointing it out, the 300D looks ideal in every other respect, I almost went and grabbed one from Hong Kong. Perhaps the Sony DSC-F828 will answer the challenge if they fix the yellow color bleed in the production model.
