Hello I am gathering information before a purchase my fisrt Heli. I have decided on a raptor. Initially I wanted a raptor 30 but seeing the samll diference in price I want to know if it is better to get the 50 rigth now an learn with it or get the 30 first.

Thanks in advanced

My 2 cents,

I agree it doesn't really cost a whole lot more to upgrade from a R30 to a R50.

However, the fuel savings by going 30 first will get you that 50 ugprade later on.

I'd always recommend keeping your initial investment low so in the future if you do decide the hobby isn't for you, you're not out too much. Fly bone stock, don't get suckered into upgrade mania.

If you have a bit more money to spare, get a better radio, servo or gyro instead, it will improve the helis performance more than just adding horses.

A 50 is defintely thirsty and for the first 6 months, you'll be burning lots of it just hovering. A 30 will do fine all the way from hovering to aerobatics. Those who should go 50 are those who can tell the difference between flying a 30 and a 50.

Go for a R50

Hi electro-parts,

just go for a Raptor 50 equiped with an 0S46.
A 46 is less thirsty than the 50, and got enough power for the size of the heli.

R50 is better because it's got the metal swashplate and the carbon stiffener.

R30......

I would not invest in the R50 as a first bird. I had one with the OS 46 and then the OS50 in it. The heli can be very tricky to setup with the 50 installed as head speed is critical (so it dosen't go critical )
The OS 46 I had was JUNK!! Could never get it to run correctly. Either too rich or too lean. You don't want to be fooling around with the engine while you are learning.
I now have the OS 32 in my Raptor (the 50 has found a new home in my Sceadu) and can say it is a fine heli. In fact I was having more fun breaking in the engine today with it than my Sceadu (ok not much, but a little)
As for the upgrades the 50 comes with. IMO So what? They are not necessary to fly the heli. It will work great right out of the box.
Add fuel and fly!

Now if you want to get a heli and not have to upgrade down the road when you want more power then get a 50 ship. I would personally choose the Sceadu 50 over the Raptor 50, but that is a matter of preference. JR's new Voyager (mini Vigor) looks nice also. I would like to see one of those in person soon.
The 50's have the advantage of once they are setup properly you have ton's of power to get you out of a bind, but they can be more sensitive to hovering with all that extra HP bound up.
What ever you do get someone to help you set it up for your skill level

Hope that helped.

Go with the 30

Dave_D hit it right on the head. Most people couldn't tell the difference between the metal swashplate or the plastic one in flight doing aerobatics, let alone learning to hover and basic flight. Spend the extra money you save on fuel.

Raptor 50

Well,

I went ahead and went with the Raptor 50 from Heliproz because of the price and I am a beginner. I don't think the htrottle is too sensitive at all flying. And all the have to do if it is, is soften it up in your radio. I do like the fact that I don't have to spend any more money on upgrades. I have a powerful, reliable engine that I know I won't want to replace with a larger one for a while. And they fly great with the larger blades, super stable in hover. And the 50 is not hard at all to set up. You can easily control the headspeed using your computer radio, I have had no problems, but I am also just hovering too. The 50 engine I have read is a lot easier to maintain compared to the 46.

My vote is go ahead and get the 50 and forget about buying anything else. Yes, it drinks fuel, but it is a lot more helicopter compared to the stock 30. And what you spend on fuel is less than what you would end up spending on upgrades, time spent on taking the heli apart, upgrading the engine, etc.

But either way, you will have a blast!!

Just my .02 worth,

Brooks

Win Win

The real point here is that you cannot choose poorly.

The Raptor 30 keeps you initial costs low and will help with fuel economy while learning to hover. You will probably want to upgrade to the 50 eventually for the added power and better flight characteristics that longer blades provide.

The Raptor 50 will last you a very long time. You might never want more power than it has, and then you must choose a 60. It will be pretty much the same as the 30 in a hover, though fuel costs will be higher.

Both are relatively cheap to crash and fly very well.

Whichever you choose I am sure you will be happy with it.

I think if I started over I would just go ahead and get the raptor 50, I think it flys better and when you get in to the 3d you wont need to upgrade untill you want to.
