I have read in several posts that people chage the timing mode on their controllers. I have a Hacker Master 48-3P Opto / Hacker C50-15L and Tp 4s4p and I can change the timing. But to what effect ??? What would timing change accomplish and when do you want to do it ??

Having played with the timing, you can see a change. For example, using the B50-11L on 12 cells with the stock timing (which is nominal for the hacker motors) will give the best run times. I typically run with 5 degrees timing which gives more power, but drops the duration. A friend runs the Hacker 48-3P speed control with 5 degrees timing when using the standard packs and the stock timing with the Lipo pack. The timing allows you to optimize for the motor you are using.
